The gadget board seems, um, moribund at the moment, so I'll ask my question here.

I just got a MacBook Pro for Christmas. I am new to Mac (haven't used one consistently since 1991 or so), and new to laptops. What hardware and software MUST I have?

Also, we're in the market for a new printer. We get a rebate with the new Mac, so the time is ripe. Any thoughts on all-in-one printers? I thought I wanted the new Epson (not offered by Apple), but cnet says it's flimsy and has buggy software. Does anyone have the HP j6480 or similar? I'm not jazzed about having to stick with the tricolor cartridge, but it otherwise looks like a pretty good item.

Just MS Office, really. Everything else is included. The following are options: adobe photoshop or illustrator but you probably won't need it. Adium is a good IM client that integrates all your IM accounts. Tubesock is good for downloading youtube videos or you porn videos. Also there is a free program called Abi word which is good free word processor for opening up word perfect files.

I have a Brother 440CN which is OK as it has a decent sheet feeder. But I would think you could do better now.

PhotoShop if you can afford it. PhotoShop Elements if you can't. Bejeweled 2. I should use Delicious Library more comprehensively than I do. Google Earth (free). HandBrake (free). Buy an AirPort Express and plug your house stereo into it -- trust me on this. If your "just putting some music on" stereo is also hooked up to your flatscreen TV, consider skipping the AirPort and get an Apple TV instead.

I will never buy another HP product again. My all-in-one is a Canon (MP 810?), but I'd consider an Epson just as seriously.

2. There are lots of shareware/freeware apps that are useful, but not essential, you'll find over time. Word/Excel/Powerpoint are nearly the same as windows versions. Entourage is a better version of Outlook, although apparently has some problems with exchange, apparently, if you have access to an exchange server (without a bunch of security).

I have a Brother MFP (7820N, which I believe has been replaced), laser not inkjet, and have been quite satisfied with it. I think Icky has the same one (from a previous thread), but it blows his fuses or something. If you have newish wiring, consider it.

The Jets and Lions will always be laughing stocks. At least one doesn't tease you from year to year. I say let's send both, along with the Raiders, Bengals and Browns, back to D-1.

Brett Favre doesn't? What an abysmal performance. The only saving grace is that not only did Pennington get to give a big middle finger to his former team, the Jets still have to find a QB.

Firing Mangini seems like a knee-jerk reaction. His record was mediocre, but the end of this season was all about Farve creaking to a grinding halt.

Well, by the time the game was in the second quarter, the Jets were only playing to put New England in the playoffs (Baltimore had what, a 2 TD lead by then?). Not a huge incentive, frankly. Particularly for Mangini.

I disagree that Philly is the team that you don't want to see in the playoffs. NFC maybe (though both Carolina and Giants probably could handle them easily -- frankly the top 2 in the NFC are far better than anyone else in that division). I think that both of the Wild Cards in the AFC are the teams you don't want coming to your stadium.

So are you saying Favre or Mangini tanked at that point? From the snippets I saw (thanks NFL broadcasting rules that kept us in Baltimore!), Mangini probably didn't order Favre to throw balls right into the hands of Miami defensive linement.

I'm just saying there was a team that was playing to get in and a team that wasn't. I don't think they threw the game (this is so obvious I don't even feel like I should have to say it), but emotion has a fair amount to do with performance in big games. It was a really big game for exactly one of those teams for probably 3 quarters of the game.

(And criticizing Favre for forcing balls in to spots that are high risk is like admitting that you haven't watched 90%+ of his games over the last 10 years or so. Oh, maybe I've said too much.)

This is interesting but largely irrelevant. The 2008 season is history. What matters is 2009. With Singletary now firmly at the helm -- he of the Winning Half-Season (the best we can ask for these days) -- the 49ers of Old will rise from the ashes like the mythical phoenix.

No, really. I mean that. I'm confident. Who needs a star QB anyway? Last time we knew who our QB would be next season was the end of 2006, and look where that went.

I think Eagles fans are patently ridiculous (and vacillate wildly between calling for the firing of your QB and coach and considering yourselves the team to beat). The Cowboys hand you a win and all the sudden you are the team to be scared of? Um ok. From ESPN, if you'd like to think about Week 16 for a moment:
Quote:

Written off after a 10-3 loss at Washington last week, Philadelphia avoided elimination when Oakland upset Tampa Bay and Houston beat Chicago in the early games. The Raiders were 13-point underdogs against the Buccaneers, who lost their fourth straight.
I'll give you that the Giants don't want to play you, but it isn't because the Eagles are a better team than the Giants or because the Eagles are suddenly a hot team, it is because it is always a danger to play a divisional team in the playoffs. They both know each other too well.

Favre also put quite a few balls in the hands of his own receivers that they managed to drop.

I'm not so sure the Cowboys handed the win to the Iggles, so much as the Iggles ripped it out of their hands, but whatev.

I agree that Iggles fans are patently ridiculous, but no more ridiculous than any other set of fans. We love our birds. We hate our birds. We are proud that we booed Santa. We are ashamed that we both love and hate Andy Reid.

But I think you should be careful of saying that the Giants can handle the Eagles... a team they split with this season, in 2 close games.

All the stars in heaven had to align for the Eagles to even make the post-season. It seemed impossible. And then it happened. Right now, it almost feels like the Gods like Philly.

That SF win yesterday cost me first place all by myself in the weekly pick 'em. Still I'm rather proud of having picked 13 right yesterday. My best performance of the season (half season! I only started playing mid-year, just like the Niners!) came in Week 17.

the lions left two of the three people who had been running the team with millen in place. One guy was promoted to GM. how do you keep your job if you're part of building an 0-16 team?

I hope this doesn't come off sounding mean or cruel or petty, but I thought it was pretty well established by now that normal rational thought does not apply to the greater Detroit area. I mean, if it did, no one would ever live there, but yet, there they are, suffering without even realizing that there are other places to live. Places where the sun shines its goodness year round, where victory celebrations generally do not result in the deaths of the participants/passersby, places where you are generally at least two or more steps away from disintegrating into the Thunderdome or Waterworld or Snake Pliskin territory. Places like Nebraska. Wouldn't that be a step up?
