Fat Oprah vs Thin Oprah

My best friend called me this morning to say his doctor told him he needs to lose (at least) 40 pounds. Though he is a tall man, he is in deep denial about how fat he has become. He argued with me that fitness will be his ticket back to svelteness and that the weight gain has happened over the past 8 months. He is wrong on both counts.

I pointed out to him that he ate a bucket of buttered popcorn and the equivalent of 4 servings of pasta while I was with him last night.

His response: "I hadn't eaten all day and I didn't drink beer!" And then we argued over portion-size.

Any advice on conveying information about proper nutrition and portion size to a man in deep denial?

Have him read The Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food.

Count his calories for him and then count the number of calories he burns on average every day. Convert the difference into pounds gained in front of him and be quiet as it sinks in.

It doesn't matter how often I use the colon; It only matters that I use it more often than the semicolon.

Kind of like Oprah.

Still the best haiku I've ever written.

Speaking of Oprah and bad spin class songs, I have to admit that the group dance the Oprah audience did to that terrible Black Eyed Peas song was kind of cool. Let us not speak of this again.

Also, although I have been the non-Wilco-loving outlier on this board for a while, the more I hear "Wilco (the song)," the more I think it kicks ass. Something about the riff and the wailing feedbacky guitar. That's rock and roll.

I recently read that to lose weight, one should eat 11 x one's current weight (assuming 30 minutes of exercise 3 times a week) in calories, to lose 1 pound a week.

I more frequently use semicolons. But why is the "e" key under your left middle finger and the "a" your left pinky?

in Metro Detroit, the spin class teachers all carry a Nazi aura, both in looks and in the clipped orders. spin instructors in a state that is 95% Aryan must be very scary- like in uniforms?

Good strategy, but I will leave that to his girlfriend as I lack credibility on the issue.

I just saw this in my rss feed: Hard Truth About Just How Many Calories Are In Fast Food: "Other shockers: the Dunkin' Donuts Blueberry Crumb Donut weighs in at 470 calories — disconcerting for something that takes three seconds to eat — and the Subway footlong Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki packs an un-Jared-like 760 calories between its buns."

760 for lunch. 760 for dinner. 300 for breakfast. That leaves room for a snack or a few glasses of wine.

Let's write a diet book, Sidd, it will sell millions. And Sasha Grey can be in the movie version.

Plus, if you go to Chevy's and get one of the giant tostada salads, that subtracts calories. After all, it's a salad.

I liked the comment about how someone's doctor told him, "If it tastes good, spit it out."

Whoever talked about the formula of losing weight being 11x(your weight) = calories to consume, dat's CRAZEE!! That's too few calories, I think -- or maybe that's just not much physical activity.

Those fuckers at Subway have brainwashed my kids into thinking Subway is health food. I suppose it's better than french fries and greasy hamburgers, but health food?!? Not exactly.

This summer, my friends, including the fat fattie, started checking my breath after I'd been to the ladies' room in restaurants, no matter how many times I have told them I am not bulimic.

I am incapable of making myself vomit, even when I really need to.

People who have never had a problem with weight control sound like sanctimonous jackasses when telling people who do have problems with weight control what to do. Stay out of it, because you can't lose the weight for him and you're very likely to sabatoge the whole thing if you get pushy about it. I speak from deep personal experience on both sides of the weight loss equation on this.

If you feel the need to help, send him this link. Tell him a deeply out of shape friend of yours lost a lot of weight when she followed a regimine similar to the first schedule in this link and running burns a lot of calories. He can start on October 1 and be ready by January 24. If you feel the need to give him more, tell him also to investigate http://www.sparkpeople.com or http://www.weightwatchers.com. Those two programs offer much, much more than any individual person can.

I can't put my fingers on it at the moment, but I recently read about a new study that supported your theory -- that to lose a meaningful amount of weight, fewer calories does far more than increased exercise. Maybe you will have better success with google-fu. When I did google, a bunch of interesting supporting articles came up.

Time: "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin"

If you're not losing weight, it's probably not your age, your metabolism, or your genetics that are causing the problem. It's simply the fact that conventional aerobic exercise programs are not a particularly effective way to drop the pounds.
