I found it interesting that the Biography on the Vanderbilts that I watched the other night mentioned that GV had two sons with some Cooper dude, and that one of the sons committed suicide, but not even a peep about the goings on of Mr. 360. Sure it was produced a couple of years ago, and it would have cost A&E at least $50 to tag on some line about him at the end, but I'm pretty sure he was famous when it was produced (even if it was lesser celebrity), and what kind of a message does it send to him that he'd get more ink for offing himself? Who produced that thing? taxwonk?

How did he off himself?

It's possible he asked not to be discussed, or something.

Apropos of nothing, I miss those Carvel commercials with the gravelly-voiced old guy (the owner?) shouting "I'm Fudgy the Whale!"

eta: Yup, it was Tom Carvell. Thanks, google.

This guy has different feelings about those commercials:
  • I don't know what all the fuss is about, Tom Carvel freaked the hell out of me when I was a kid. And the poster who used the pseudonym, "Ghost of Tom Carvel" gave me a taste of the sinister fear that was my childhood. Every time those low rent commercials came on, with the sepulchral, asthmatic voice of Tom Carvel, pleading with me to buy a "Fudgie the Whale," or a "Cookie O' Puss, " I just freaked out, man, i couldn't handle it.

you do realize this sort of thing proves that I was right about the Sirius station playlists?

str8outavannuys 01-05-2006 06:26 PM

Two completely unrelated points

1. That hawk vs. snake thing reminded me I haven't checked gorillamask.net lately (they often have stuff like that -- followed by "Who ya got?" Anyways, today there's a link to a crudely drawn video making fun of Fall Out Boy's indecipherable lyrics.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...q=fall+out+boy

2. A MN high school hockey team beat the USA women's national team today, 2-1. I'm marginally surprised by this. If I recall, the 2002 Olympics was Canada vs. US for the final in women's hockey, so the US should have a good program. However, based on what little I've seen of US women's college hockey, there's no way they could hang with a good male HS team.

What can I say, Hank? I'm merely a tasteless prole, living in a cultural and intellectual backwater.

I've even been known to enjoy a domestic, mass-produced and marketed beer (in a Not Ironic way).

if it's PBR then you're as urbane as Coltrane. you just have to sneer when you say it.

I've actually listened to less than an hour of Sirius- you may well be right and I'll drop to 205-14

Hayley Wickenheiser (sister of Doug) played on a Finnish men's team (not as goalie, so she actually did something), so she could handle her own. That's just an example, and I don't think the rest of the team was as good as her. They beat the US in the Olympics, but didn't smoke them, so hard to say how they would stand up against a MN highschool team. I have no idea if the same players are coming back for the Olympics, so who knows what the caliber is right now.

I have to say, one of the best moments for me of the 2002 Olympics was when the women hockey players received their gold medals holding their babies. I totally cried.

so str8 disrespects women icers generically, and should someone with a crush on you, decide to lie about being a hockey player on the internet, the sock should claim to be defense or a forward. Gotcha.

I think I recall in Antitrust class (one of the few interesting law school courses) that he went out of business for antitrust violations. Something about forcing stores to buy his filler for the soft serve machines he invented? Anyone?

He won

scroll down or search for FTC

But he died in 1990. Fudgie the whale lives on, however, in supermarket cases and Carvel franchises nationwide.

There are still Carvel signs around in NY (or there were when I was there last, a year or so ago), but there don't seem to be solely Carvel stores (the one I was in sold Carvel ice cream and greasey greasey pizza - I had both), so maybe the franchise went under. I used to insist on Carvel ice cream cake every birthday (from, let's say, the ages of 8 through 18). The crumbled up cookies in the center and the electric green and blue gel frosting... Sigh.

Any NYers want to ship one out to me next month?

I don't understand. Is this Certain Someone your friend? Your only friend? Seems kind of a mean thing to say to your only friend. But then again, you did say the message was to all your friends, and there it is, a message to just one person. And it's pretty gratuitously mean.

Or perhaps you just wanted everyone to Look At You.

From ice-cream cakes to Real Italian Bread (the kind you can't get in San Francisco), there are many reasons to live in TCOTU.

But Carvel isn't a NYC thing as much as a Lawn Guyland icon. In the town where I grew up, the Carvel was conveniently located in the same strip mall as the 7-11. This meant that your friend with the good fake ID could get the twelve-pack of Bud (or at least four or five tallboys) that you'd drink in your buddy's Mustang out in the parking lot while you all smoked the last of the dirt weed. When you were good and high, you staggered into Carvel and picked up one of those long plastic sleeves full of flying saucers. These could be eaten or traded with the other members of the 7-11 parking lot social club for cigarettes, Bud tall boys or more dirt weed (depending on how high the other guy was and how badly he wanted a flying saucer right that minute.) Then we'd all go pull a train on paigow.
