9. A FISH CALLED WANDA (1988)
8. THE BIG LEBOWSKI (1998)
7. THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY (1998)
6. SOUTH PARK: BIGGER LONGER & UNCUT (1999)
5. OFFICE SPACE (1999)
4. THIS IS SPINAL TAP (1984)
3. BEVERLY HILLS COP (1984)
2. NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION (1983)
1. GHOSTBUSTERS (1984)

Take out the following:

Clueless
40 Year Old Virgin (barely laughed)
Wedding Crashers (funny for 15 minutes)
South Park (was funny when it came out, but not really that funny anymore)

Some of these were funny at the time, but aren't quite as funny anymore:

There's Something about Mary (FRANKS AND BEANS!)
Austin Powers (I have to admit, I enjoyed it when I first saw it)

These movies need to be on the list:

The Royal Tennenbaums

Raising Arizona
The Princess Bride
Revenge of the Nerds

My top five would be:

(1) The Big Lebowski
(2) Office Space
(3) Trading Places
(4) Rushmore
(5) The Royal Tennenbaums

By 1. Ghostbusters, does that mean Ghostbusters was funniest. If so, that's a gate to legitimacy for this list and confirms why I gave up my subscription to EW.

Also, thanks for letting me friend you.

If it's some Thursday night, and I feel like watching TV, and have to scroll down into the 300s to find a movie, I'm more likely to sit and watch the Meaning of Life for a while than any of those others, because it still makes me laught. And Monty Python stays fresh through more viewings than anything but Princess Bride.

Crimes and Misdemeanors isn't as funny as vintage Woody. But it's still got "There's Something About Her" by a good bit.

When was "My Cousin Vinny" made? Because that's another one that's wildly hilarious and stands up to many viewings.

After having posted on lawyer or law student chat boards on the internets since the UUnet boards back in the early 90s, when I was on the federal dole, npi, yesterday, as noted by Sidd, I acheived my funniest post ever. Two thoughts:

-after a milestone event like that, there is sure to be a dropoff;

-notwithstanding the above, if you perservere, even at a point where you career looks over, even after multiple retirements, your best days can still be ahead of you.

I am like Evander holyfield. With two ears. If he had beaten the Russian dude.

Did it occur to you that the song was released in 1984 and was written in the present tense? Here's another helpful tip: Prince has found Jehovah and all of his musical offers to make love 2 U are now off the table.

Ho! It's another Christmas song
Whoa! Get ready brother for another Christmas song
They play for a month, Ad infinitum
One day it struck me someone must write 'em
So! It's another Christmas song

Santa clause singing on naughty snow
Reindeer ringing in the mistletoe
The manger's on fire
The holly's aglow
Hear the baby Jesus cryin' ho ho ho

Hey! It's another Christmas song
Yay! Another oft' returning
Royalty earning Christmas song
I've got plenty more so go buy a modem
Log on to iTunes and pay to download 'em
Pay! For another Christmas song

Chestnuts glisten on a silent night
Sleighbells kissing by candlelight
The tree is frozen, the winter's bright
Who'd have thought the wise men look so white

You! Don't you wanna sing along?
Too! My humble yuletide
Dreamed up poolside
Christmas song

Make it a part of your holiday cannon
Make it the heart of my retirement plannin'
Do! Sing another Christmas song

But wait! Who's this?

Young ones starving on a dead-end street
Taped up tabloids on their frost-bit feet
Hear what they carol as they huddle for heat
Please help the Colbert Children eat

Whoa! Just another Christmas song
No! This is like no other Christmas-mother-lovin'-song
Public to whom I'm so proud to have pandered
Please save my family and make this a standard
Go! Join the ever-growing throng
Who are singing
And swingin'
While my kids are clinging to the hope
My register's ching-ching chinging from the cash I'm bringing
From another Christmas song

2009.

Well. With a couple of prominent exceptions, this past year kinda sucked.

Unfortunately, to listen to prognosticators, it sounds like 2009 will suck also.

I hope they're all full of shit. More precisely, I hope that the coming year is one of recovery and prosperity and joy for everyone here. Happy New Year.

Thanks, I had a great year, not working from January until August whilst exploring. Oh, but you aren't talling about me?!?!?

I'm curious. Beyond the obvious (Obama, the market collapse / credit crisis / bank failures / bailouts, etc.), what will be remembered of import from 2008?

From my own legal-centric point-of-view, it was the Supremes rejecting the R's, the Neocons, Bush' s, and Cheney's poistion that their (loose pronoun, but you know) actions were not reviewable, challengeable or subject to the U.S. Constitution.

I do not know which scholars are analyzing it this way yet, but the Supremes in their past couple of terms have essentially had to reissue Marbury vs. Madison. "Congress, President, you have a lot of rope, but it is not infinite, and we refuse to let go of our mandate and role as an equal check and balance upon your whims."

Obama is not going to push the Bush objective, so much of this is moot. But I think the last two terms will mostly be remebered for the Court - subtly - saying "No."

Various thoughts on the bowls so far.

* Shame that USC decided to lay an egg at Oregon State this year, because they're now playing as well as anyone in the country. Felt like they could've made it 100-34 against Penn State if they hadn't taken the foot off the gas at halftime.

* I meant Southern Cal up above, not South Carolina, of course. USC of the South got their brains beat in by some cornfed kids from the Midwest. Time for the ol' Ballcoach to start anew with spring practice.

* UGA's win was a microcosm of their season, I thought. Offense futzes around for a half or so, then get their act together and (if their opponents weren't world-beaters) win the friggin' thing. You can do that about 10 games a year, but not against the really good teams. (Sorry, Hank.)

* I'm pulling generally for ACC teams this year, but I must admit that I have a soft spot for Cincinnatti in tonight's Orange Bowl. I can't get enough of the announcers' repeated descriptions of UC as that scrappy team with that outstanding young coach, whatsisname. Sounds like a good squad.

Penn State couldn't hope to cover USC's receivers. They were also freezing cold. They hit their season average in penalties in the first ten minutes.

The only consolation I saw was no Big Ten team could have come close to USC. Ohio State would have been crushed. It's just two different classes of football. Any team as fast as USC should never be in a bowl with a Big Ten team. Ever. It'll be a mistmatch every time.

3. BEVERLY HILLS COP (1984)
2. NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION (1983)
1. GHOSTBUSTERS (1984)

Take out the following:

Clueless
40 Year Old Virgin (barely laughed)
Wedding Crashers (funny for 15 minutes)
South Park (was funny when it came out, but not really that funny anymore)

Some of these were funny at the time, but aren't quite as funny anymore:

There's Something about Mary (FRANKS AND BEANS!)
Austin Powers (I have to admit, I enjoyed it when I first saw it)

These movies need to be on the list:

The Royal Tennenbaums
Bottle Rocket
Rushmore
Raising Arizona
The Princess Bride
Revenge of the Nerds

My top five would be:

(1) The Big Lebowski
(2) Office Space
(3) Trading Places
(4) Rushmore
(5) The Royal Tennenbaums

I still think the South Park movie is funny, and it was brilliant at the time. As stated previously, The Princess Bride is a fine movie, but not a laugh-out-loud comedy. While I enjoyed The Royal Tennenbaums, I can't put a movie with such a realistic suicide scene and an all-encompassing feeling of melancholy on a list of the funniest movies of the past 25 years. The 40 Year-Old Virgin arguably belongs on the list merely for the "You know how I know you're gay?" scene. Austin Powers Original Recipe should probably make the list, but the banality of the catchphrase-heavy sequels could overwhelm the case for the first one. I think I have A Fish Called Wanda on my Tivo. I think I need to rewatch it before making a Top Five list. I would add Kicking and Screaming (the Noah Baumbach film about graduating college and doing nothing, not the Will Ferrell vehicle about kid soccer) to the list.

I agree with Lebowski first and Office Space second, regardless.
