No, no, that he's great in bed.

So, how did the dinner go? Backslide?

The look I shoot for is "vaguely fashion-forward." But as a rule, when I go on TV I wear snowshoes, winter or summer. They never shoot that low, and it gives me great confidence to know that my footwear will not let me tip over, forward or backward.

Actual Fashion Question

As long as Ty is getting advice on replacing his wingtips, I'd like to reopen the white dress shirt topic. I recall that spread collars were the preference of the board or at least Sebby. French cuffs or barrel cuffs? Traditional or fitted?

Thomas Pink? Charles Tyrwhitt? Macy's? Nordstrom? Banana Republic? Brooks Brothers?

I am no longer a GA, so money is an object.

I now know nothing of the white dress shirts, if I ever did.

What is your sig line from?

Comedian Patton Oswaldt deserves the credit. He was railing against a heckler and used it to end his rant.

Charles Tyrwhitt shrink after two washings so as to be unwearable.

Brooks Brothers traditional pinpoint point collar are marvelous as are Nordstrom's similar basic. The Nordstrom sets you back $50 but looks like a million. Both are very full cut.

IF you ever get to MIlwaukee, get to the factory store. Nearly half off for imperceptible seconds.

I'm a fan of Paul Fredrick, which is catalog/online. Pretty much every size (collar/sleeve), and white shirts come in a variety of collars and regular or trim fit, if trim is your fit (I don't think there's an answer to that other than, "what is your body like), and barrel or french cuffs. They sometimes run deals for basic white shirts-$19 each for 3 or something, but even on their more regular sales the prices are around $40-50/shirt, depending on the fabric (I don't bother with the 80s and pinpoint, as I find the fabric a bit heavy for DC's humidity).

Frankly, my dear, I blame Clark Gable.

Sounds like you'll wear them to work with a tie on a daily basis. Go with barrel cuffs; it won't look over the top for a day-to-day look, unless you can pull off Don Draper's style.

Go to a Thomas Pink store to try on their shirts and figure out if fitted is a better cut for you than regular. I really like the fabric for Pink shirts, but they're not inexpensive. I find that Pink's fitted is far more trim than Brooks Brothers' fitted. I got an e-mail from BB saying that they now have an even more fitted cut, though I'm not sure that is available in white dress shirts yet. Charles Tyrwhitt's fitted is narrower than Pink or BB. Watch for sales from CT.

Brooks Brothers shirts hold up well. I haven't noticed CT shirts shrinking, but I usually wear them without a tie, so it wouldn't be a problem. My advice might not be great on that point, as I actually would be fine if they shrank from laundering.

Banana Republic makes some really nice shirts with good fabric if you get their patterned Monogram line shirts. Look carefully at their white dress shirts, as I've seen a range of fabrics and fit. I'd stay away from buying them online, just so that you can see what you're getting.

On men, I prefer spread collar and barrel cuffs because they look chic without trying too hard. Fitted, of course.

I know this may earn me more opprobrium from the board, but you might consider getting tailor made shirts. They can be less expensive than buying off the rack. My most money conscious lawyer friend gets them done locally and we're a provincial backwater. Any real city should have many options.

Barring that, I have to second Icky Thump's Brooks Brothers and Nordstrom suggestions. I have worn BB myself and I was always impressed with the fabric quality and long-term wearability. Many of my friends rave about the Nordstrom brand quality. While I've never worn them (except perhaps home), they have great buyers and their stuff is always priced well.

Depends on makers and wearers; fitted is better if you're getting custom tailored. Otherwise, the fact that they were cut to fit a manequin somewhere may or may not mean they fit you. Italians seem to have no chest and the French no wrists.

I'm sure Hank, at 6' 11", has the same problem.

Almost any off the rack shirt will pull at my wrists and shoulders; besides being uncomfortable, this means custom tailored shirts also last longer. And my tailor will even throw one or two in when he does a suit.
