Weird. Sometimes it takes a little while for some of them to load.

One night in Miami area

Hey lawyer-talking folks.

I have one night to spend in Miami area (this coming Sunday night). I'm flying out of MIA Monday around noon. I'm considering Key Biscayne instead of South Beach, but would love to hear about other options... I'll be driving down from Naples on Sunday early afternoon and would like to have a mini tropical experience, but have no need for ridiculous twenty-something drunken fools, crazy tourist crowds or the like. Just want to get to a hotel (or bnb* or airbnb), have a fruity drink, gaze at the ocean, maybe have a nice dinner. You may also take into account that I'm not a rich lawyer-type, so unless it's a Starwood property I won't be staying at a fancy resort unless it's at a deep discount. Suggestions?

*no, I'm not hitting up BnB to stay at her place. :)

Sorry, I don't know anything about Fla.

This piece on Deadspin nails a lot of what sucks about ESPN.

I am by no means an expert on The 3-0-5 (translation - visited a client there twice, and had one case there that brought me down a few more times), but no visit to Miami is complete without at least thinking about eating stone crabs at Joe's. (Confession - I had fried chicken the last time I was there because they had run out or something, and it was awesome. The key lime pie is also Not Bad.) They might only be open seasonally and the stone crabs are definitely seasonal, so ...

Also, consider a breakfast of toasted pan Cubana and cafe con leche. Any bakery will do. And read Tom Wolfe's Back to Blood on the plane. Unless you hate Tom Wolfe, which many people do.

Fenwick is researching the list of potential suspects as we speak - one of the Weinstein brothers is my guess, but Fenwick is leaning toward Brad whatshisname (the former agent who ran Paramount). I suppose David Geffen and Sherry Lansing are the only ones in the clear.

Do not read Back to Blood. It starts out promising, but is just awful by the time you get 2/3 of the way though. Wolfe has lost it.

Thanks for the link. I have liked Greg Howard's writing for awhile now, and it seems he's stepping up his game.

And can I say here (as I've said elsewhere) how excited I am for TNC's run of Black Panther??

I've only recently discovered that The Undefeated was a thing. And I don't get it.

I'm still not clear what ESPN had in mind after reading this article. Did they want a site with black talent writing about sports and pop culture? Seems like they wanted some true substance by the way they were chasing Coates. But then what does the site look like? Black issues in sports and everywhere else written about by black talent (with sports issues pulling people in)? If given the freedom to write about actual issues in a way that would surely offend people that make up a huge base of ESPN's demo, it sounds like a great site, but a terrible business move.

Generally speaking, ESPN sucks for lots of reasons. The two biggest reasons for me are: (1) As the article says, they have fallen into this "Every issue has two legitimate sides" false equivalency bullshit such that whenever one of their small-minded employees who thinks they're brilliant because they're on tv says some stupid, offensive shit, ESPN doesn't know what to do and (2) The people they employ are not journalists; they're fans and they conduct themselves like fans. There is very little impartial reporting. All of the personalities they promote are trying so hard to have relationships with the people they must base their reporting on that it's just one big, incestuous clusterfuck. Either you are legitimate news source or you are E! You can't be both. They try. How can you report on the NFL doing all the dirt it does on the regular and maintain a business relationship with them at the same time? Not possible.

Finally, I've never paid much attention to Whitlock, but that's because I can't recall him saying anything interesting.

To be fair, that has been the critique of each of Wolfe's novels, and is actually one that I tend to agree with to some extent. (Not the "book becomes just awful" part, but the "book starts off great and becomes less great about 50% through" part.) For example, trim the prison-inspired philosophical epiphanies from A Man in Full, for example, and you have a legitimately great book.

My issue is usually more about how unkind, even mean, Wolfe is to his characters. Which is an odd thing to worry about, what with his characters being fictional and all, but I am just weird.

Anyhoo, YMMV, toe-may-toe, etc.

You're right on both counts, but it's funny -- the two cut against each other. The first thing you say is about not taking a position, and the second is about pleasing their sources. Both are about being dominant and unchallenged. The false equivalency bullshit comes from being the only show in town, and wanting to appeal to everyone. The incest is about being the only show in town and not needing to worry about the viewers, but about the personalities' individual need to be the one getting the scoop. I remember when the quality of ESPN's analysis was better than what you could find anywhere else, but that was a long, long time ago. Now they feign ignorance about sports like soccer, lest someone thing them uncool.
