Really? Hmm. He says it was his new personal trainer.
But yeah, he came back from the winter break 25-45 lbs heavier and rock solid 3 years ago and then proceeded to have his best year ever. Barry says if it was only roids, then everyone would be doing roids and hitting 80 homers a year.

Not as drastic as Sosa though - if you see his "before" pictures, it's quite a significant change.

That was good reading. It lends a different perspective to the question - "what's being a lawyer like?" I like the viewpoint of being a lawyer is like a business, but not really. As long as I have your permission, I'll raise those points in the phone call I have not yet received from said person wanting to go to lawschool.

Perhaps I should raise the issue that time is important and deadlines are a way of life, and if you're going to expect someone to wait around for your damn phone call all day, well.......then...... I guess someday you'll make partner.

The biggest problem with this analysis is that Geoff is too big a pussy to be in the majority who challenges Dat. He'll probably challenge Dave or Tess. Death to Geoff Brown.

I thought Jay Mohr did a great job in the focus group. It sounded exactly like every focus group I've ever done. All one of them.

So, my prediction didn't come true, except in the sense that Dat didn't go down. I thought Rob's comedy was hit and miss, and was not at all surprised to see him go down with class and integrity. As I said before, I saw Ralphie live opening for Jay Mohr, and he was pee-your-pants funny. The bit about Mexicans last night made me spit my drink up.

Very intrigued by the scenes from next week, which indicated that a) next week is the last immunity, and b) next week is the last one-on-one battle. How are they going to eliminate people from here on out? Audience voting?

Come on -- not everyone's doing 'roids, but watch a game on ESPN classic from the 80s, and you're first reaction is always "who are these scrawny guys?"

Speaking of which, my episode of Pyramid apparently aired in June. I found this out because they sent me the check for the big $1,200. They did not, however, give me a heads-up that it was airing, hence I could not tell my friends, or y'all. Bad result for all concerned. But hey, if you saw Kathy Nijimy screw up by saying the verbotten word near the top of the Pyramid some Friday in June, that was me with the dismayed look on my face sitting across from her.

How disappointing. I sort of know how you feel. My dog was on the news once, and I only caught the last 2 seconds of the story. I didn't know it was going to be on, so I couldn't tape it.

Come to think of it, I was also on the news once, and although it was taped, the tape has since been lost.

I was also on CNN once (in a nonspeaking role), and never even got a copy of the tape to lose.

Dammit, now I am depressed. All of these important moments in my life history, lost forever. Thank god I've saved all my favorite posts.

When asked, I tell people that if you can get into a top school, the economics of going make sense and you'll have a good time while you're there. If you can't, you're taking too big of a financial risk, and you'll be miserable with all the competition (unless that shit gets you off). That said, some people are desparate enough to take the sort of gamble that going to a mediocre school entails. Kind of like stepping up to the roulette wheel with your last $10 after a brutal night of getting hammered playing Paigow -- you know the kind of night, where you have a pair of kings in back with AQ in front, and the dealer gets two pair with AQ? Or you have three of a kind in back, and the dealer gets a flush, and outkicks you up front? God I miss gambling.

In the past, Big Brother 4 was ALWAYS optional viewing, as there were numerous websites with minute-by-minute updates re the live feeds, as well as summaries of the shows themselves. It looks like Joker has retired from updating, as he threatened to do, but I'm sure many more will step up to carry on the tradition of "Hardy is working out (NT);" "Eddie and Curtis are hanging out by the pool (NT);" and "God I hate George so much" -- "This is not an update. Moderator please delete."

That's exactly the kind of advice that leads to a lot of unhappy but highly credentialed lawyers. Someone who applies to law school "to see what happens" and gets into an impressive school will likely feel a lot less ambivalent about the law after getting that acceptance letter than she was before. The prestige of the school will just add momentum to the whole process and unless she really digs the lawyer gig, the prestige driven pressure will only get worse.

Not that I feel that way, I'm just saying.

Thanks. It was cathartic to write. I was having an especially bad week vis-a-vis my firm's management, but I stand by those observations as true even during the good times. Whether a GP writes you a big bonus check or nixes your expense request, approves a vacation or clucks disapprovingly when you take your desk at ten after nine, it's all a symptom of the same "that's my money you're spending" mentality of law firm life.

But the contrary advice: go if you want, regardless of the caliber of school, leads to even more unhappy, and not highly credentialled lawyers.

For anyone who isn't sure about going to law school, and how can anyone be sure until working on the other side (well, maybe paralegals and children of lawyers), at least a degree from a top law school is relatively bankable, thereby allowing the person to pay off loans once it's clear em hates the law.

Huh? The people I know who are happiest and most successful in their fields of law went directly from third-tier schools to government offices or public interest and have never set foot in a downtown BIGLAW office, even for a depo. Of course, they graduated in the days before universities saw law school tuition as a profit center.

The most miserable are the ones who went to first-tier schools and were dedicated to public interest/enviroplaintiff work, but had a fateful date with a calculator and their mail sometime before 3L.
