I don't know exactly how completely ignoring the existence of discrimination is healthy either.

I'm glad your experience has been a positive one. And maybe it's because you can pass so easily (not saying you do, but based on appearance, it seems pretty clear most people who don't know you see you as white, not latino--and Spain is really more like France than Puerto Rico, no?). But there is no way I would send my child out into the world without an understanding of what the world is like.

I don't disagree -- and I didn't miss anything in your post, just jumping in.

Latinos can be of any race. I am white, as is my husband. I just think that he adds a layer of crap that doesn't apply to him, and it's not productive. In my life, I have from time to time (it's a long story that I'll tell you in person some time) felt that certain white people (ok, I'll say it -- in 100% of the cases, they were southerners) consider me to be "other" than them, but I just mentally roll my eyes at their ignorance and move on. My husband would allow it to consume him (that's hyperbole, but you get my drift). Then again, if someone who I felt considered me "different" had been in a position to give offer me a job or promote me or something, it would be a different story.

All that said, I don't know how many times I was put in the "nah" pile of resumes because of my name, and I never will know. I've no evidence that it's ever happened, or that it hasn't. But I've done all right for myself, so I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist.

I guess all I'm saying is that there is real discrimination out there, and I don't think we've been victim to it (not because of my race, anyway -- my sex, yes). It cheapens the "real" prejudice when you expect it without any grounds to do so (I'm talking about my husband's experience and his attitude - not anything else).

Also, I'm talking out of my hat. Well, not really - I'm just making observations based upon my H's and my very different experiences. No grand conclusions to see here.

Actually, you have. I discriminated against you because you are hispanic. I just don't think you noticed. I think you were tipsy.

Sebastian does that, too. For what it's worth, you have a nicer hat than Sebastian.

You have to add positives and negatives here to figure it out. Gloria Estafan probably isn't discriminated against much either. Add 30 pounds and 20 years, show a little accent, and you'll feel the sting. Have your kids ever felt it? Because kids, they can be cruel.

Ha. No. He sort of looks like a younger Al Franken. You can imagine how much he digs that comparison. He does wear a gold chain, though. So as to relate to the hermanos in the barrio.

Long ago, when we would drive back into the city, instead of taking the FDR, we'd drive down 2d Avenue (through Spanish Harlem). I would always remind him to take out the little PR flag and hang it from the rearview mirror so we wouldn't get jacked. (we laughed and laughed... oh, how we laughed)

Another time, we were at a golf course (a NYC public course), and speaking Spanish to one another. The neuyorican girl behind the counter looked at us saucer-eyed and said "you speak spanish? but you WHITE!" It was like she'd seen a vampire or something.

i wasn't talking about the one church or you. you originally asked why people would say "wait until arson is proven." I tried to give one reason, and have now said for the 8th time PUT ASIDE THIS ONE CHURCH because the timing would be too co-incidental.

No. I originally asked why people would say "Wait until it is proven that this specific arson was racially motivated."

And you saying "put aside this one church" is exactly the point. Putting that church aside, removes the conversation from any context at all. It makes me sound like I'm saying all church fires are racially-motivated arsons. And the conclusion you draw (we should be careful to wait until we know more before we label the causes of generic shit racist) is pointless when applied to the conversation we were having.

Didn't I have to call you out recently when you argued not all lynchings were racially motivated?

About a year ago, I got into a fight with a drunk guy on a Supershuttle at some ungodly hour of the morning. I made an off hand comment about having a big Mexican family, and he spent the trip from DC to BWI informing me that I wasn't of fact Mexican (which I'm not, I'm a mutt that is half hispanic) and that he'd never heard of a white girl wanting to be Mexican.

I am the sort of Hispanic that, like dtb, could probably pass for coming from pretty much anywhere along the Mediterranian.

I was raised to take a certain pride in being Hispanic, which went hand in hand with taking pride in my family. My grandfather took the presumed discrimination route that dtb describes her husband as taking and turned it into a sort of self-rightous haughtiness. There was a "colored" elevator in one of the hospitals in Houston back in the day. Hispanics were supposed to get on it, but my grandfather, a doctor, refused to get on it whenever he'd come to town. He, he'd say, read Cervantes in the original Spanish. There's no way in hell he'd get on a second-class elevator. I don't think it occured to anyone to kick him off.

Awesome. That would take years. After you get your job, would you nominate me to be a federal judge?

texas racism is too complicated to figure out. there's a book that i thought was "Manchild in the Promised Land," but i guess it isn't. but it's similar, and famous. the guy, a Puerto Rican, is in Texas for some reason and he makes friends with a Mexican. they go to a whore house, get laid, and the guy has to pretend to be Mexican. then, in spanish, he tells his buddy to leave because he is about to tell the white whore that she just fucked a Puerto Rican, and that will cause a big blow up.

I don't recall that argument, but if it happened Hank's right. Not that it matters; no one disputes that most lynchings were extrajudicial punishments that were rarely inflicted on whites for the same transgressions and now the word has lost its original meaning and has become -- thank God -- most often a colorful metaphor for basically anything unfair imposed upon a black man by the powerful.

I have my heart set on the post of Supervisor and Paean Writer, Obama Biodiesel Refinery #425, Los Angeles County. Remember me when you are firmly ensconsed within the bureaucracy, comrade!
