In like 1915 Germany attacked a bunch of countries. Several of what became the allies spoke to Germany, and were not clear that they wouldn't stand by while Germany attacked. this emboldened Germany.

Millions died because of this conversational mistake.

Then, about 20 years later, Germany was rebuilding and threatening countries again. Rather than starkly threatening war, England engaged in conversation and emboldened the Hun.

again, millions died. It was as if no one had any memory at all.

oh, by the way, on another note, appropos of nothing, my new nickname for PLF is Neville Chamberlain.

In the end, I think the world wars turned out o.k. A messy process and all that, but the good guys won, right? U-S-A! U-S-A!

Could someone please enlighten me on the benefits of clam-digger pants? (Unless you're clam-digging)

Shorts are great when it's hot--your legs stay cool. Pants are necessary for climatic, professional, religious, or even aesthetic reasons.

But how do clam-diggers fit in? They don't maximize coolness, nor are they acceptable in providing warmth or appropriate coverage. They seem solely to function, at least as I've seen them around here, to highlight and accentuate cankles and over-sized calves. What am I missing?

Because she's the most beautiful woman ever. I recommend you see Malena.

Her accent alone beats all.

Announcement: I am giving up all those advice sites and columns and will now only look one place for guidance on affairs of the mind and heart.

I think Trinny and Susannah called them one of fashion's deadliest sins. In other words, there are no benefits. They are singularly unflattering to everyone.

I don't have the faintest idea who Trinny and Susannah are, but I like their sense of style.

after smart dinner parties pablo picasso would have guernica wheeled out for his guests to admire over the cheese and cognac- but always after the main plates. his chef was a heavy saucier, and papa feared soiling of the work from an ill-mannered guest.

in the early 50s an american heir to a cigarette dynasty was at table with a few dozen others- the boor stands and says, "to the great war, and to it's sucessful end!"

the young man was only in his early 20s, and missed the entire fight.

Papa called his servant over and ordered the work be wheeled in immediately, even though they were in the middle of a pasta course-

as it came in he said, in his fractured English, "sucessful end? How so when this was its start and its middle for us here, on the lines? and perhaps you'll ask Mme Goldbaum how her family enjoyed the time? Mr. chamberlain will have a special spot in hell, I hope, where he can continue to talk with the hun."

think. about. it.
