Can anyone explain the definitive Jewish position on the afterlife. I grew up believing it was that there is no afterlife, but that one lives on in the memories of his/her descendants (hence the remembrance ceremonies at certain milestones following a death... I think its one year after or something like that...).
But in the past decade or so, most Jews I've met have said they believe in some sort of undefined afterlife existence. A few have flat out adopted a notion of a very Christian-like Heaven.
As one who doesn't believe in the Christian notion of Heaven (I subscribe to the loose view of certain Native Americans that we go 'back to the earth' into some sort of peace with the greater world), I find this disconcerting. These cats were supposed to have written the book on which we Xtians based our gig... If they're switching to follow our stuff, the whole foundation is fucked up.
