The ski areas are out of town. In places that grow their own rednecks. In another state, actually. The only ski-related activity in my hamlet is a ski jump. That's pretty random, come to think of it...

I learned with incredible disdain recently that my high school has added lacrosse. Apalling.

In other words, maybe.

Do you herd the redneck skiers leaving them no choice but to go over the skijump?

What is there about broomball* and ultimate frisbee that would keep black people from participating? Don't see a lot of brown faces playing hockey here but there is an inner city hockey program (Hockey in the Hood) working on that.

I can give you some locations where you'll find local rednecks. They're there, shooting pool, drinking cheap booze, leaving rotting cars in their front yard, doing landscaping work for NY expatriates. But if you're not into lift guys, you may prefer not to know.

There are two black kids on my younger son's hockey team. He and another kid are the Latinos. There are three (or four -- I can't remember) Asian boys. And one Asian girl.

But no rednecks.

Sigh. This is lovely. Especially since, until a few weeks ago, I was expecting to be in a cold and generally miserable east coast city for the entire winter.

Your boys play hockey with girls? What are they, wimps?

We had one very good (and cute, if I recall) girl soccer player in our youth league growing up. She could play, but she would also intentionally trip the boys ALL OF THE TIME because she knew she'd get away with it. Any contact you made with her was a yellow card.

I have worn tube socks on my arms by cutting out the toe. I may soon invest in some arm warmers, though.

I will, obviously, use it as a penis warmer.

It was a joke. Black people don't like cold and ultimate frisbee is football without the fun.

The thought of running in cold, snow and wet in Chicagoland, reminds of the old European Cross Country race (8k i think) that was run in/around early Dece out in the NW burbs, like Palatine or Elgin or some place like that. Ever do that? One of the best races I've ever done. (and that's saying something!)

To TM's point about Tebow's stupid eyeblack-with-Bible-verses, CBS sports writer Gregg Doyle actually makes a cogent non-sports-related observation.

Quote:

But there's a quote from Meyer celebrating Tebow's return to college for his senior season that turns my stomach. Here it comes:

"There's the functional football player part of it, but we all know it's much deeper than that," he said. "He is so good for college football. He is unbelievable. When my daughter texts me in the morning the Bible verse he has under his eyes it's good for college football, it's good for young people, it's good for everything."

Sorry. Wrong. If Tebow were a Muslim or a Mormon, and Meyer's daughter texted him with Tebow's chosen verse from the Koran or from the Book of Mormon, would that be "good for college football, good for young people, good for everything?"

Of course not.

Tebow's religion is seen as good because it is the religion of the majority. But it's not the religion of everybody. It's exclusionary, and just because you share Tebow's faith, that doesn't mean you're right. I don't expect you, or Meyer, or Tebow, or your pastor, to agree with me.
Uh, carry on.

I think Atticus would say that because most people like bible verses it's cool for him to wear it.
