I sort of like the current title, but, I will go with the following instead (apologies to Hank):

I also have issues with the metaphor. Is he sucking all narcissism into him, as a black hole does to all matter? Is he such a hyper-concentrated mass of narcissism, that he sucks everything else into that? Maybe that one works, kind of.

Anyway, I mostly am posting to say: Penske has risen! WORD!

We need to bring back the bidet in the US (was it ever here?). Doesn't Rasheed Wallace have a urinal in his master bathroom?

Ice Baths

Could any of the runners on the board talk to me about ice baths? I ran 13 miles on Sunday (I'm doing very little this week and next because my half-marathon is on the 25th), and it was my last long run before the race.
On my vacation, a marathoner preached to me about the benefits of ice baths so last Sunday I took one. I filled the bath with a big bag of cubes, put in some epsom salts and ran some cold water and got in* and managed to stay there for about five minutes. I think it helped my legs a bit, but I wanted to take a survey to see if any of you do ice baths, and how long you stay in, and if it helps, and if you take a hot shower after, etc.

*Motherfucking fucking hell, it was so fucking cold

I look at it and I hear Will Farrell singing Con Te Partiro from Stepbrothers. Which is funny, but I don't want it in my head anymore.

Never done it. My way of recovering from marathons usually consists of drinking beer all day.

1. I think that they rock-awesome for recovery.

2. I stayed in about 20-30 minutes. no pain no gain; although after 10 minutes or so, you get into a state where you can't feel the cold anymore.

3. I used to follow it up with sex, which can be like a hot shower, sort of. ymmv. :D

I, like Coltrane, have never done it. My coach said it was a bunch of hooey and I believed him, since I really want it to be a bunch of hooey.

WTFIWWY!!! Do it after training. I recall an epic weekend once upon a time. August. It was in the high 80s and humid at 6 AM. Rode from the Chi up to Lake Zurich, around the lake and back and then bricked a 15 miler along the lake in 100 degree heat.

Took an ice bath for an hour and went to bed.

The next day, same heat and humidity, did the Chicago Tri in 2:05:and change.

Another ice bath and then Pennys noodles for lunch.

Dissent. Is this a coach like Bob Greene, Oprah's faux-triathlete coach, who, as best as anyone in the fucking sport could tell had done like one sprint race ever and then Oprah expertised him??:confused:

never soaked in anytihng other than a whirlpool/jacuzzi when available. of course pro athletes soak in ice so there might be something to it if you are hurt.

Anyone with experience with recovery from 180 plus bike rides over the course of two days can also chime in. 100 miles on Saturday, 80ish on Sunday. MS150 my (sore, sore) ass.

gwnc and I are the masses when it comes to running. advice from the Gods, like you, is like our asking Franco how to get a pizza delivered quickly- "just order one, have the first guy killed for being late, and see if they don't get there quicker from then on."

we don't have the same support system you have- like you're sponsored by speedo, nike and a bike compnay right? any one of those would buy you an ice soaker and crew.

We're on our own.

Excellent. I have to say, I kind of liked it once I got past the initial shock. I just thought I was going to get hypothermic if I stayed in any longer. But I'll aim for 10 minutes at least next time.
