There was one posted the other day.
I shudder to think of the vitriol we'd be hearing if this was passed by a GOP senate.

Apparently he was a homeless drug addict taken in by the protesters.

So club's view will be that they were druggie enablers, and Adder's will be that they were compassionate human beings helping someone in distress.

Of course, Adder is much more right. But, boy, helping out the homeless is a big public safety problem, and ought to be discouraged. They should die quietly, out of the way, and certainly without coverage by Fox "News".

There have been numerous reports of violence at these events, include rape and child abuse. Yes, these things happen generally in society, but they're more likely to happen in situations like this.

Serious question: Why?

Why is rape or child abuse (or homeless drug addict dying) more likely in situations like this? I don't see it.

ETA: Also, for diagnostic reasons: could you also please answer whether you think the Madison protests were plagued by union violence?

Really, why? I've been imagining these gatherings as more like urban versions of Burning Man, without the burning man.

A lot of Burners are helping with the logistics. They're good at mass gatherings and concensus development.

I thought Clubby had vaguely "gotten it" when he compared it to Venice Beach, but, well, now "its" gone again.

It won't surprise me if crime is higher in the occupy zones, though, if they're taking care of a bunch of homeless folks - that is both hard and dangerous, but important, work. People on the streets often have many problems and little or no support. Sounds like they're one of those thousand points of light.

There's a lot of crime in Central Park. We should probably close it, or at least make it subscription-only. Keep out the riff-raff.

Btw, here are two articles on Occupy and Burning Man. I tend to agree with both, though I haven't gotten involved in any of the Occupy stuff.

I really hope someone decides to Occupy Center Camp this year.

At the Oregon Zoo, the penguin habitat has been undergoing a major remodel, so the penguins have been living in half of what is normally the polar bear habitat, nesting in what appear to be small-ish dog crates. Somone recently put up sings that say "#occupy polar bears." No reports of tear gas, so far.

This is why I thought of it being more like Burning Man than a place where bad things happen as Club thinks:

Quote:

Occupy Wall Street is certainly an experiment in socially relevant communal living that involves camping and picking up after yourselves … and to the extent that any anybody doing that is “like Burning Man,” they’re like Burning Man.

There's something about a car crash on that page?

I think you have it backwards. Penn State should be invaded by an overwhelming police presence, with anyone who is there arrested. If there is any resistance (such as sitting or standing in a chain with locked arms, or singing protest songs or something like that), then pepper spray and batons should be used to punish the non-compliant. If we get to dole out that kind of punishment, then maybe we don't need the arrest and charges part.

I was just wondering what Club's baseline is when he says that child abuse is "more likely to happen in situations" like Occupy camps.

I mean, if he's comparing it to the average protest, or to people walking to their offices, then sure -- because it's awfully difficult for one pedestrian commuter to put his dick in another pedestrian commuter. But if he's comparing it to non-Occupy circumstances in general, then you have to wonder.

You can understand this, right? Most of the bond exposure is owned by banks, which will ultimately be backed by the governments.

You mean after the banks are nationalized?

We had a a few economist types from the ibanks to lunch earlier this week for one of the bar committees I'm on, and they got off on the topic of bank nationalization. There was agreement between them on it being pretty likely in both France and Germany.

Before, after, what's the difference. If the banks have to take a hair cut, there is going to have to be a bailout.

I meant violence in general and I mean in large crowds, especially where resources are limited, not Occupy specifically.

But I'm done with this topic, tired of beating my head against the way. Although I may post a list of all of the violent incidents that have occurred just for shits and giggles.

I don't buy your premise that violence is more likely in large crowds. Violence is way more likely at home, or in connection with the use or trade in drugs and alcohol.

And these aren't particularly large crowds we are talking about. This is like saying that the average ABA Section conference should prepare for the spontaneous outbreaks of violence. I go to my Section's annual meeting each year, and have yet to see anyone exchange blows over the rather limited selection of morning "bagels." And that meeting is way bigger than any of the Occupy protests, I think.

Heck, your average weekend afternoon at Walmart is probably a bigger crowd. Violence isn't unheard of, but it's pretty darn rare.

ETA: You know, I was going to say that a woman sleeping outside in a tent in a city was probably more exposed to risk of sexual assault than if she was at home in her bed, but given the frequency of date and spousal rape, that's probably not right either. But leave it to Faux News to drum up the hysteria and find a cop to speculate that much more bad stuff must also be going on.
