He was undoubtedly one of, if not the, greatest poets in the English language during the latter half of the 20th Century. He was also a racist prick. Some people can separate the two and enjoy the work on its own terms, but I can't read his poems (even the amazing ones, like the one Atticus posted) without hearing the other stuff in the background.

A craftsman. Not an innovator. Walzing through the century, put him up against TS Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Larry FerlinG, or Walcott, and he's a good argument for the exhaustion of the English literary imagination.

Pound is a prick worth reading despite it. Larkin, his prickhood kind of turns one to the alternatives.

Ah, I was there last month, but blessedly I did not need to sit. There is something to be said for the squat shitter. Same bartenders/owners as when I lived there 14 years ago. and they are just as unhappy to see me.
