And other things. He apparently didn't like John Coltrane. Or cricket, either.

In a world of people who get passes for being odious, hateful people on account of their artistic ability (on the Grammys or elsewhere), he's one that really sticks in my craw.

Did you just call me Coltrane? 02-15-2012 03:52 PM

I thought he just got a pass for being another upper-crusty English twit. He had artistic ability?

He was undoubtedly one of, if not the, greatest poets in the English language during the latter half of the 20th Century. He was also a racist prick. Some people can separate the two and enjoy the work on its own terms, but I can't read his poems (even the amazing ones, like the one Atticus posted) without hearing the other stuff in the background.

I'm pretty sure every book published in the last eighteen months was about Dahl and his issues.

A craftsman. Not an innovator. Walzing through the century, put him up against TS Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Larry FerlinG, or Walcott, and he's a good argument for the exhaustion of the English literary imagination.

Pound is a prick worth reading despite it. Larkin, his prickhood kind of turns one to the alternatives.

I've seen that story somewhere before. And I don't think it was there.

Which makes me think "genius" troll.

You are singularly more avoidable than I am -- no one has stood me up out of 21 socks met. Despite his fears that I would be the living embodiment of SNL's Church Lady, even Slave didn't stand me up.

In my heart, I stood you up. I was only interested in meeting your wife.

She's far less traumatized than I would have guessed, and vastly nicer than you have a right to expect.

You know, when I was in Michigan, I really meant to set up a meeting time and stand you up, but just couldn't bring myself to do it during the holidays.

I think that's enough to give you a fourth standup.

Word on the street is that you are a fan of the Double Down Saloon in Vegas. And that is good enough for me to even forgive a certain low blood sugar moment.

I am indeed a fan of the Double Down, though I hope not to have to use the facilities while there -- they have that general dive bar air of squickiness.

And you are never going to let me live that down are you?

Thanks. BTW, fwiw, I know you go to the theatre a lot. If you happen to see an actress in a SF production that looks just like her it's a coincidence, I'm sure.

Does "I'm too whipped to leave the house at night" really count as standing someone up?

Ah, I was there last month, but blessedly I did not need to sit. There is something to be said for the squat shitter. Same bartenders/owners as when I lived there 14 years ago. and they are just as unhappy to see me.

no, think bigger. The real move is to not respond to my suggestion to get together. I've been stood up by c-listers, but the ones who don't respond to the idea of getting together, dtb, icky, fringey, that's an A-list exclusive move. stick with your first instinct. shit, even ironweed went with that last fall in an attempt to list-leap.

why would women not adopt the Asian toilet stance when at bars?

Sorry Sidd, I'm in Vegas, playing craps and having fun. Emeril was at the table last night with what I assume was his wife, but possibly not. I would have taken a picture, but I'm too Klassy.

I'll be back here again next Friday, should you be able to get a hall pass and join, though I know you only get one a year.

For the record, I was planning to go, but using carrier pigeon as the communication method was confusing and I thought you were talking about the following week. I was already a state away by the time you guys started eating--next week is still on if you're around.

Dude, I have kids in college, I know what's hip. No one answers email anymore man, Steve is dead and Bill does charity.

What way does that leave to communicate? And realize none of us want to get anywhere near Atticus's twitter debacle.
