Keep your eyes open

Who knew that snakes need exercise?

Keep an eye out for a missing pet, a 6-foot-long, red-tailed boa constrictor named Mercy.

The snake was taking some exercise in the front yard of their home Sunday evening when it escaped. A search turned up nothing, so Dillman posted fliers on telephone poles and distributed them door-to-door, and hired some neighbor kids to help her look. She said the days are still warm enough in East Wenatchee for a boa, but the nights are getting cooler, so she's hoping Mercy will come out in the sun to warm herself in the morning.

In the meantime, the man who mows the back field has agreed to hold off for a few days, just in case the snake is in the tall grass. And Dillman went to the store yesterday get a couple of rats. She plans to put Mercy's cage in the yard and tie the rats to it, in hopes the snake will find that enticing.

"I think she's probably scared," Dillman said.

Rebecca Long, field director for the Wenatchee Valley Humane Society, says constrictors can be dangerous to small pets or children, although they generally go after rats or squirrels, and only eat once every three or four months.
