I remember visiting friends in NY. I thought they were misguided when I saw them buy 15$ a pound coffe while they lived in rathole, since they couldn't afford more rent. I had no problem with expensive coffee once they had an adequate home.
If I understand PP, she is making a similar point:
once you have achieved the husband and children
then, and only then, can one devote time to label shopping without being vapid.
