I always thought they were apocryphal. I had an uncle who, anytime he was at our house and I was leaving for a date, would ask me if I was going to take her to the beach and watch the grunion running. He definitely wasn't talking about fish. Or minions. Although I would guess there would be some grunting involved.
I usually responded that we would rather go park down by the washed-out bridge on Walden Avenue and fuck.
