I use my electric skillet once a year to make latkes. I do them in wesson oil. It's disgusting and the house smells awful for a day or two.

Hmm, stinky house is a deterrent, particularly since my kitchen ventilation is poor, cooking odors travel right up the stairs to my bedroom, and I can't fall asleep if I smell grease.
I wonder if making homemade applesauce after the fryng would take care of the greasy odor.
