basically he knew he couldn't tell anything from the script so if he could do it temporally (and this was 20 years ago when he was working) he took it. he knew that meant being involving in lots of bad work, but also increased his chance to hit one good every so often.

I just like Sutherland. He plays himself in most roles, and I happen to like his salty, kind-of-depressed air. This goes a long way to explaining why I find him so consistently entertaining regardless of the vehicle. I guess I like most actors for this reason. Except Pacino. He plays himself too well.
