How's this for a scenario that (isn't going to happen but) would get there: Palin is the 2012 nominee leading Bloomberg to self-finance and independent run, creates a meaningful ground operation (really not going to happen) and lays the seeds of a right of center sane party.
Of course the main obstacle to this is that it assumes a significant number of right of center sane people that aren't imaginary.
