I know "a pox on both houses" is your default setting, but (a) Obama is the President, (b) he raised the date with Boehner's office beforehand and they didn't object, and (c) no Speaker has ever said this to a President before.

It's not a null set. But your general point has much merit - it is close to one. Which underscore the pathetic nature of Obama's request. (I could be wrong here, however... I've seen conflicting stories about which thing was scheduled/requested first. Can't find a definitive answer.)
I agree with your second paragraph's suggestion Obama encourage people to watch GOP debates. I would suggest he stream links to them on his Twitter and Youtube accounts with this heading: "Option B: You Decide."
On your last point, the ship's in uncharted territory. And as I noted above, I can't find out who scheduled or requested what first. If you find a credible link on that issue and you're right, I'd say Boehner is acting inappropriately.
