 Your traditional manhattan (the cocktail, not the Island) is bourbon and sweet vermouth. Some add a dash of Peychaud or Langostura bitters. I don't; that would be more than halfway to an old-fashioned. A "perfect" manhattan is made with dry vermouth. Dry vermouth is to bourbon as shit is to, well, anything you'd want to put in your mouth.
