Backing up is extremely easy - the operating system comes with "Time Machine", which is an automated backup program. My brother backs up to the cloud, but I'm not convinced that the company he's using will be around in five years, so I haven't gone that route.
eta: I just switched from a PC to a Mac at work, but I'm using VMware Fusion, which lets me run a Windows desktop on my Mac. So far that seems to work very well.
