 Pay attention!
 | I thought someone said that coffee and espresso don't have enough water to counteract the dehydrating effects of the caffeine, but that soda does, although it's a close thing and YMMV depending on other health issues. If not, I think that's right.

 2 questions-
Do any of you have "expedited airport security?" It sounds like a hassle to get, even if you qualify. Is it that much quicker?

I might be going to Australia, certainly to Perth. Any advice on a few other places to go?

 | 1) You mean Global Entry, which qualifies one for Pre-Check? Yes. There are two minor hassles with global entry--a) filling out the form, which is a bit like a security clearance; b) arranging the interview, which sometimes can't be scheduled for a couple of months and has to be done at an airport (pretty sure Detroit is one). If you pass the background check, you can use it to enroll in pre-check with any airline that supports it.

2) Used precheck the first time a couple of weeks ago at Reagan National. Security line was unusually long (10m wait probably). But lines are now for suckers, as the precheck line was 3 people long. Kept shoes, belt on, no nude-o-scope, and to the gate within 5 minutes of exiting taxi. Even better on international returns. I have gone from mobile lounge to taxi at IAD in <5 minutes when I haven't checked luggage. Checked luggage is generally a disaster at IAD, but on most recent return I waited only about 5 minutes for it and we were in taxi within 15 minutes of getting off mobile lounge.

Bottom line: for $100, even if you travel internationally only once a year it is totally and completely worth it.

 | Can you meet a guy for me there? Same rate as before. Saves my client having to pay for a $27,000 first class ticket.

 | Does Jet Blue participate? What about the airport in Tuscaloosa?

ETA: ooo, didn't see it cost a hundred dollars. My firm won't pay for that because it's in a category that can't be passed on to a client. They say we should be happy to fly because we get free peanuts and juice.

 | 2 or 3 times a year I have to go to a meeting abroad with several other people from Boston; I'm just about the only one going who doesn't have Global Entry. It seems to be akin to or slighly better than flying first class in terms of security.

2. I get the irritation expressed by the writer of the Gothamist piece and of the Awl commenters in response to her original post (summarized as either "that's not what Park Slope is really like!" plus some "shit, am I missing out?" and a lot of "you can't pretend to write literary fiction when you are really a trashy Judith Krantz and how dare you set it in Brooklyn?" I mean, when the characteristics of my town/part of the country get sorta mocked and exaggerated in a book, I also join with the literary establishment in expressing outrage ... Uh, nevermind.

(from the early blog, TheGreeksDontWantNoFreaks.Geocities.com: "...and where does the author get this married his mother and blinded himself when he found out thing? Absurd. I know many royal families and this never happens.")

3. Carry on. |
