Seems more cultish than anything else and generally the parents seemed unusually subdued. Maybe because none of us have a clue what the fuck is going on.

Correct. Of course the dichotomy is that suburb basketball is generally spaz basketball while city basketball is something to behold.

 | Or care. I watched a lot of lacrosse games in high school but was always drunk. And usually unsuccessfully hitting on the best friend of the girlfriend of the team captain, which is why I was there in the first place.

They really ought to have a bambi shoot as an olympic event. That would have US gold written all over it.

my guys were a collection of well off white kids (actually kid), or well off mixed race, and poor black and mixed race, but all suburban. They all thought themselves cold blooded. When they started being in tournaments (in middle school) with Detroit kids it wasn't a talent difference, it was a desire difference. Detroit kids were playing for it on a whole different level. First tournament my guys lost, but then they realized they could stand down or step up. They stepped up and were much better players for it. Of the 7 core players, 5 are playing at some level of college.

I read a biography of Jud Heathcote, Magic's coach at MSU. He was talking about one of his players who grew up in rural (read lily white) Michigan. the kid had stats enough to be the State's Mr Basketball. Jud said a white kid can't just play against white kids and have any future at the college level. But that was in the 80s. today any serious ball player is on AAU courts from March until august. For real players the suburb/city distinction is fading (although the reality of city kids having nothing else is tough motivation for suburban kids to overcome)

Dumbo works too. If she likes Hipsters, obviously she should move to Williamsburg. If she isn't afraid of black people or is paying herself, Prospect Heights (and anywhere else).
