I can't really pick a favorite of his books, but I have really loved most of them. He's described as "new wierd" because he's sort of sci-fi, sort of fantasy, sort of some strange new genre that doesn't really fit category yet.

Mieville is kind of an cquired taste for me. I liked but didn't love Un Lun Dun but he lost me with Kraken. I may give him one last try with Perdido Street Station because that seems to be the one people like the most.

I was really happy with Fringe in seasons 1 and 2. Very X-Files (on purpose, obviously) in a good way.
SPOILER:
But when they started going back and forth and living different lives in mirrored worlds, it just got really stupid and I gave up on it.

You need to watch the BBC's Sherlock. Very smart update on the books. Two seasons of three two-hour episodes each. I really wish they were cranking them out faster, but I suppose this is why they're so good.
Luther on the BBC is also very good. And Justified has three seasons which are all pretty good (the second season being just outsanding). Sons of Anarchy was a pleasant surprise as well.
I'm in the middle of Breaking Bad's 3rd season now. And although I dropped it during the first season when it was on tv, it's just one of those shows you have to stick with and you'll start to appreciate it.
I hear great things about Damages and Homeland and I'll give those a watch at some point.
After drafting this I realized that I spend a lot of time at the gym.

I really like the BBC Sherlock, but I've always been a sucker for Holmes. Cumberbatch is great, and Martin Freeman makes a great Watson. I share your wish for more of them, but perhaps Steven Moffat has his hands full with Dr. Who (another show I keep intending to get caught up on).
I watched the frist two episodes of Elementary the other day. I was highly skeptical about Lucy Liu as Watson, but ended up getting pretty into them. It helps that I quite like Johnny Lee Miller.
Apparently I'm a sucker for British actors.
Speaking of which, I've got to watch some more Luther too. I don't think I've finished the second season.

Sherlock looks exactly up our alley. I am a total sucker for Holmes. Thanks, TM.
I agree, Justified Season 2 was incredible.
In terms of unrealistic lawyer shows, I do love Suits on USA. It is only slightly more realistic than Ally McBeal, but it is very clever in its own way.

I did too. I don't know if I'm going to stick with this show. Lucy Liu sucks. She doesn't know what to do, they're not writing for her, and she's getting no direction whatsoever. And there is absolutely no chemistry between the two characters (at least so far).
And there's not enough Sherlock Holmes stuff. That's the money shot. The BBC version and the movies know this. The deduction is the whole fun of the show. You can't save it for the end because then the show is just Law & Order with the guy from Full Metal Jacket.

Never watched one episode of Ally McBeal, I'm proud to say. I found Calysta Flockhart repulsive in every possible way one could imagine.

There are entire Tumblr blogs devoted to individual episodes of "Sherlock." Those articles deconstructing the did-he-or-didn't-he "Sopranos" finale are child's play compared to the e-ink that has been spilled on "The Reichenbach Fall" alone.
SPOILER ALERT
The most interesting one so far is the one theorizing that Richard Brook is real and it was Jim Moriarty who was fake all along.

Hence the phrase I added, "or their inability to act on that, given the commercial model".
But gosh, you are so smart.

As for the Office, Ricky's laughing all the way to the bank about slow death of the U.S. version.
|
Well sure, but the way he played that anyone with half a brain knows he built his name with the UK Office (and Extras- 2nd season perhaps best comedy show ever) and ensured his ancestors will be rich forever with the US. I could guestimate an assumption that Americans are stupid enough to watch it, but When The Whistle Blows points to a similar believe about the UK audience.
But see, Ricky has kept himself sort of distant from the US and when I think of his work I think UK O and Extras.

I just can't watch that show until it comes on DVDs. I can't understand a fucking thing those people say without subtitles.

The guy who plays Moriarty is pretty good.
MORE SPOILER SPACE:
They better have a good explanation for the end of that one (and I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they will). Because, based on how they filmed the confrontation and fall, it would seem impossible to believe that Sherlock was able to manage that kind of switcheroo.

Good habit. Better than spending a lot of time in the office I'd say.
Speaking of which, when does someone at the gym turn from being a cool former rocker to creepy old dude?

I disagree about Liu. I was quite happy that she's not doing her usual schtick of funny little faces and "aren't I so darn cute." But my expectations were so low that I was pleasantly surprised.
I agree that there isn't much chemistry between them yet, but maybe it will show up eventually. They obviously have a big decision to make about whether Watson and Holmes end up with a romantic relationship. The BBC version played with that a bit, but having switched Watson's gender, it's going to be tough for them to ward off the notes of some dimwitted network hack.
I also agree that it could use some more Holmesing. For now, I'm in, but I could see Miller's charm wearing thin as the main reason to watch.
Of course, I'm also a little annoyed by the notion that Holmes has a father.
