I can't see much of a Romney is dumb theme this year - he's clearly not.

He's a slippery, untrustwrothy, self-absorbed and greedy bastard, without a jot of empathy on a personal level for anyone, and he has a tin ear and fairly odd social skills, but he's not dumb. The great thing is, even most Republicans, when exposed to him, just don't like him.

He's the kind of company that looks great on paper, but when you do the diligence and meet the team, you just know it won't fly.

After Dukakis, we had four successive Republican Governors, ending with Romney. Every other office of consequence and both houses were held by Democrats. I think there was a general feeling that a check or balance was needed on one party rule, a feeling that finally dissipated when we had Romney.

It did come back later, and I think it's part of why Scott Brown is there and has a decent shot at reelection. By the way, no one who knows him hates Scott Brown. He may be dumb, but I think he is honest, sincere, and hardworking. And dumb.

Romney seems like a decent sort of guy who has spent all of his time in pretty rarefied circles, and for whatever his other skills doesn't have a great ability to relate to ordinary people or to pretend to be something he isn't. I think this is more about the public persona he projects than who he is.

Bush was stupid. Cheney was not. Dole was not. HW was not, but famously gaffed to make himself look out of touch. Quayle was. Reagan had a touch of the dim (although SNL mighta been to something).

Anyway, hardly consistent. |
