Romney is very clearly not stupid, but he does seem to have some odd tics when he meets people, as reported by the NYT article. If you think Calvin Trillin wouldn't make the same fun at a Democrat's expense, you don't know Bud Trillin.

it seems likely he'll be President in a little over a year, I suppose it is positive that the talk shows will free be to make jokes about the president again, though I for one regret President Obama won't have a second term, and didn't do the stuff he promised that caused me to vote for him.

That one wasn't even very funny. I think I could do a funnier Romney, with all those quirks of his.

I can't see much of a Romney is dumb theme this year - he's clearly not.

He's a slippery, untrustwrothy, self-absorbed and greedy bastard, without a jot of empathy on a personal level for anyone, and he has a tin ear and fairly odd social skills, but he's not dumb. The great thing is, even most Republicans, when exposed to him, just don't like him.

He's the kind of company that looks great on paper, but when you do the diligence and meet the team, you just know it won't fly.

I'm sorry about your teeth, but if the President is going to be a Republican (thanks, Ben Bernanke!), then Romney seems like the least worst.

We regularly hate our governors, though by the time he left, there was a special kind of distaste for him.

After Dukakis, we had four successive Republican Governors, ending with Romney. Every other office of consequence and both houses were held by Democrats. I think there was a general feeling that a check or balance was needed on one party rule, a feeling that finally dissipated when we had Romney.

It did come back later, and I think it's part of why Scott Brown is there and has a decent shot at reelection. By the way, no one who knows him hates Scott Brown. He may be dumb, but I think he is honest, sincere, and hardworking. And dumb.

I don't think it sounds like Obama, but I also don't think it sounds like Romney. OTOH, he wasn't my governor, so maybe I don't know Romney well. Romney seems like a decent sort of guy who has spent all of his time in pretty rarefied circles, and for whatever his other skills doesn't have a great ability to relate to ordinary people or to pretend to be something he isn't. I think this is more about the public persona he projects than who he is.

What makes you think he is decent?

I think this is Romney being called awkward and weird, not stupid (psst - he's a Mormon, and they're, you know, weird).

Bush was stupid. Cheney was not. Dole was not. HW was not, but famously gaffed to make himself look out of touch. Quayle was. Reagan had a touch of the dim (although SNL mighta been to something).

Anyway, hardly consistent.

Obama has a tin ear, odd social skills and no sympathy? As to the last, I'm sure many sociopaths are community organizers.
