But it doesn't really matter, as my point is that is a moderate, of they type that used to be acceptable to the Rs, but no longer is. |

 | He's an independent now. I know he won the last race as an independent - did he also have the R and conservative line, or did they run someone else? I don't remember, and thought there was talk at one point of him getting all the major lines. |

We want positive narratives that reinforce an amorphous "dream" we credit to the founding fathers, but in actuality couldn't be more divorced from what they intended. We're so ridiculous and infantile now that many believe reinvigoration of our spirits is what's needed to drag us out of this spiral. "Damn the numbers... Ya just gotta believe. Animal spirits!" As if the concept of irrational exuberance could be harnessed to positive ends. (Makes you want to ask people, "Did you notice the word 'irrational' in it?")

The only skepticism the general public will tolerate is pop junk like Gladwell, who makes them feel even more empowered in their idiot spiritualisms. "Nevermind thinking before leaping. Your instinct knows all!"

And of course, the endless bread and circuses. To borrow from Bill Hicks, "Go back to bed America... We have it all under control. Turn on American Gladiators... Nothing to see here."

Guess I can't complain. The more these suckers get plowed under for taking dumb risks, the more litigation dollars I see. If only I could obliterate the urge to slap them across the face and ask, "WTF were thinking?" It's harder than you think.

Do they often have rehearings two years after a decision was made, with several new members on the court?

Do they also choose not to discuss it?

And, nice job not responding to my first point. The Rs have been crowing that HCR is disastrous for business. If that were true, wouldn't they want to present that at hearings? Assuming this was not just political theater, of course -- like a way to distract people from the fact that they were lying about plans to cut spending by $100BB

 | There had already been a great deal of debate, but isn't the other reason that the House leadership knew that if they changed so much as a comma, they would get yet another R "filibuster" when the revision went back to the Senate?

But I'm sure you're right that every one of the 25 seats that turned the house from D to R would have remained D had HCR *not* passed.
