Sorry. Usually people say "And 1" when they get fouled in the act of shooting. If the shot goes, it counts (and they get the satisfaction of saying "And 1"), but if it doesn't, they get the ball anyway. It's really just the equivalent of calling "foul" and getting the point or the ball. I prefer if you call foul and the shot goes, it doesn't count and you just get the ball back.

oh. that's (the if it goes it counts) the rule here too.
I got a list handed to me at a tournament of things kids shouldn't do (in real games, not pick up) because they turn off college scouts. "and 1" was right up there because it shows disrespect of refs. I had never thought of it that way, nor had any of the kids. I also could never get any kid to stop saying it.

Closely related is The Coach. If he's not arguing every call (and sometimes in the course of arguing one) he tries to give a lecture on proper technique, strategy, and finishes off with some helpful tips to his teammates so that they'll improve their overall performance over the course of the game.
There's a place and time for The Coach, but those places and times are few and far between. In all other cases, The Coach's advice is ignored or despised, and generally unwelcome.

What do you see as the differences?
I play with 2 groups - one outdoor (the group of guys from work playing at lunch, like Hank mentioned) and one indoor (near home). Both are essentially pickup games, but in both cases the guys mostly all know each other and largely get along, though I do recognize a few of the guys from that linked article.
Anyway, my experienced is probably too limited to figure out the difference between indoor and outdoor; it's not like I'm playing pickup in Venice or anything.

We shoot baskets at the Venice courts many weekend mornings (I don't play basketball, but I like to shoot) and I can tell you from watching that there isn't a lot of good pickup ball going on in Venice these days (unless the weekends are non-peak game times). There is, however, a lot of heated arguing. I believe the movie would be called No Guys Can Jump if shot today.
In related news, there's now a fancy court there (with some sort of padded synthetic surface) that was installed a couple of years ago and is used for Nike league games during the summer and it typically goes unused in favor of the old, cracked asphalt, faded paint courts next to it. Probably because all the pickup players suck so bad that they would be embarrassed to take up the nice court.

I used to live fairly close to Aziza and would go there often. The couscous with prawns and mixed grill is quite tasty. I had no idea that the chef was picked for Top Chef. It seemed like Aziza flew under the radar on the San Francisco restaurant scene.
Of course, I'm also a big fan of Absinthe. The coq au vin, the steak frites, and the pot de creme are all top notch. They also serve dinner relatively late for San Francisco, which is a big plus on my book.
Have any of the chefs at NOPA been picked for Top Chef? That might make for the Manfred Triumvirate of SF restaurants.
