The perpetrator is fucking a guy in the ass - an orifice he also possesses. But a woman? In that instance, the rapist is doing something he can't do with any other victim. He's using the sexual difference between him and the victim to inflict a unique pain he can't inflict on anyone but another woman. Sex and power are inextricably interwoven in the act.

Rape's about power, but also sexual aggression. Sexual aggression is, of course, somewhat natural (testosterone, etc.). But when it goes rotten, when its owners are taught women are adverse to male sexual urges, rather than necessary participants in the act who'd like to be more overtly involved but are hemmed in by a culture that calls them whores when they think for themselves in that regard, you get lack of respect for women, which leads to things like Steubenville.

Look, Liberty's average test scores may rank them below SUNY-Plattsburgh or Humboldt State, but you have to take it in context. 1000 combined really isn't bad when you've inbred for multiple generations. Isn't the really surprising one, though, Middlebury. I mean, have any of you ever known an attractive person to come from Middlebury? I agree with Fugee that there are a lot of "teaching moments" coming out of this case. Whenever I have the chance, I am going to teach young men I know that raping a passed out drunk girl and taking pictures and videos is WRONG! That is the silver lining of these sorts of incidents. The opportunity for "teaching moments."

There's a difference between rape having a sexual element and rape being about sex. Attitudes about sex are more permissive than anytime in recent history and popular culture is full of examples of women being overtly involved in sex without calling them whores. So if your position were correct, you'd expect rape to be at an all-time low. But I don't think it is.

No matter what over cultural changes you'd like to see, as long as a woman has the right to say no to having sex with any particular guy at any particular time for whatever reason she feels like (which I assume you are not saying that should change), guys are going to rape as a means of exerting power and control by taking that choice away from her.

Oh, but the most important teachable moment you overlook is the one the media has made a central issue of this case: That kids should really be careful with social media. You know, that stuff you put online - even if it's just you molesting an incoherent underage girl in a Snapchat picture you think will self-delete in five seconds - stays around in some form, accessible online, forever. FOR. EVER. Anonymous can always find that picture of you committing a first degree felony sexual assault and ruin your life. Just because you were reckless with social media.

I think this is a good thing about social media. When someone is so cavalier about commiting a violent crime that they publicize it, they get caught. They can't deny it later.

Don't take away their cell phones -- give them some extra minutes and a Darwin award. This isn't about twitter, it's about their attitude toward rape.
