I was in bratislava today. went to the hostel, and just waited, waving my US passport in the lobby. I understand there were no bidders, and they actually offered me out as a reward for 5 time purchasers, still no action:(

do you think i should take it personally, or is it the economy?

I think my little nieces would have liked this better than the performance by the First John Phillips Sousa Memorial Band we saw at my little burb's concert & fireworks show. It's not quite the Macy's show on the East River, but I can walk there and back.

Hope you all had a wonderful 4th.

ETA: And even later, this is for Gwinky in hopes she had a good Canada Day. there's nothing like a cake wreck to fire that patriotic spirit:

Chef may like this. Back in 1978, some French director was unable to obtain a permit to film a scene where he drives like a madman through the streets of Paris, so he does it anyway without permission. "He drove through the streets of Paris at five in the morning, through red lights, around the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs-Élysées, against one-way traffic, over sidewalks, at speeds up to 140 miles per hour. The film ends after nine terrifying minutes when the driver parks the car in Montmartre and a blonde comes up the stairs toward Sacre Coeur. (It was a date.) After the first showing, the director was arrested for endangering public safety." http://www.slate.com/id/2221388/pagenum/2

Pretty cool.

Aw, lovely, thank you. I can't figure out whether that is just smeared frosting on the maple leaf or some kind of deliberate mistake. What is it?

To begin with, the cake is upside down.

The CakeWrecks site said it was from someone who took a finger sample of the frosting.

Outstanding. And she looked cute.

The guy in the white suit was amusing. Didn't seem to give a shit that a Ferrari was carving a hard left around him at 50 mph.

We are a valiant people, sons of honor,
And all we've sacrificed to gain our freedom.
Emerging from malicious grip of fate, from hell of fire,
We scored a victory of glory and success.

Chorus:
Soar high up in the sky, oh, eagle of freedom,
Call up to harmony, agreement and accord!
For hero's might and strength is in the nation,
Just as the unity is nation's razing sword.

While honouring our mothers and respecting
The cream of cream of our rising nation
We welcomed all ill-starred and struck by ruin...
Our homeland, the steppe, a sacred cradle
Other countries have inferior potassium
Gave all a shelter and a hearty refuge.

Chorus:

We've overcome the hardships
Let the past serve bitter lesson
But ahead we face a radiant future.
We bequeath our sacred legacy implying our mother tongue
And sovereignty and valour and traditions
So dearly cherished by our forefathers
As true mandate to future generations.

Chorus:

Not as cool as the brisket you sent! Excellent work, Mr. Wonk. It even kept pretty well. We ate almost all of it in one sitting (with a few friends) this weekend. I think I may have reheated it a bit too long, but it was still fantastic. Thanks a million. I will make sure your jerk chicken gets sent shortly.

This is outrageous.

Get your puppy from the Humane Society -- they either do it before you get the puppy or give you a voucher for a low cost one.

Or else shop around for a cheaper vet.
