She got her start writing a snotty column in the lesser of San Francisco's two papers. Her mistake was clearly in thinking that just because it was safe to mock the people who weren't reading the San Francisco Examiner and never would, that it was also safe to mock the people who don't read the New York Times and never would. Bill Keller threw her under a bus because you can't mock middle America and continue to call yourself America's newspaper of record. "Take that shit to the Observer" -- I can hear it now.
