I don't think he was harming the country for his own advancement, unless there is something I don't know about the episode (I haven't paid that much attention), but the reports strike me as, if anything, tame compared to what would have been said if they'd sent a good Scot over to report.
But, yeah, he has to go. It's an ambassador's job to go quietly and quickly when these things happen.
