A friend of mine went to her first meeting yesterday. I'm forwarding it to her and to another friend who stopped going to meetings about six months ago after finding out she was losing her job. She probably needs to start again.

Read Caroline Knapp's Drinking, A Love Story. It's a great look at functioning alcoholism sans any emotional horseshit or revisionist explanations of childhood traumas causing the malady.

I absolutely second this. Knapp is a terrific writer and her story is compelling.

Sadly, the chain smoking killed her a few years ago. Real shame.

Strange days indeed.
Quote:
A woman who has been missing from her South Lake Tahoe home has reportedly surfaced in Concord, 18 years after she was kidnapped.
Jaycee Dugard, who would be 29 today, apparently walked into the Concord Police Department on Wednesday. Concord police have declined comment, referring inquiries to the El Dorado County sheriff's office. A news conference is scheduled for today.
Dugard was last seen on June 10, 1991 as she was walking to a bus stop in South Lake Tahoe. Dugard, a blue-eyed, blond 11-year-old dressed in a pink top and pink pants, set out to catch the bus to her school near South Lake Tahoe. She never made it.
As her stepfather watched helplessly from the family's driveway on a hill about two blocks away, a two- tone gray sedan pulled up and someone yanked the girl into the car and sped off. Even though officers responded within minutes, no trace of the car or girl was ever found.

I figured that anyone who clicked on a link with that intro would like it. I did. Maybe it's because I just read Infinite Jest, which is heavy into A.A.

The best thing to make you* slow your drinking down considerably is to have kids. It's just not worth the hangover.

Personally, I've found that alcohol is pretty much indispensable to parenting.

It was interesting, I was just giving you a hard time.
Also, I am sure it will surprise no one, but I do not think I could do AA. Admitting powerlessness and accepting a higher power are both beyond my capabilities, I think.
