(If they want to prohibit all news outlets from using the word "Olympics", then they can likely also keep Bush from speaking the word.)

I think the spots use TV footage of the teams. IOC could maybe stop that, but can't stop the use of the word Olympics.

So there's this brouhaha over an ad that the bush campaign is running about the Olympics, citing the Iraqi and Afghanistan teams as two new* democracies. The United States Olympic Committee has asked the Bush campaign to pull the ad because they have rights to term "Olympics." (I think they've been fairly agressive in defending their copyright.) The campaign told them to fuck off.

Apparently the IOC, isn't overjoyed with the Bush administration's response, though officially it's a Bush/USOC dispute, there's been a suggestion that the refusal to push the ads pretty much eliminates New York's chances of getting the games in 2012. From what I've heard from friends in Atlanta, New Yorkers may consider crossing the aisle in thanks.
They should. Who wants this garbage anyway? Certainly not the residents. Nor the overtaxed police. Nor local businesses.

Judging from the excitement over getting the RNC, I'd buy that.

This reminds me of all the stupid commercials that appear in January to tell us to shop at x for your party to watch "the big game" (as opposed to the Super Bowl (TM)). Vigorous patent enforcement is really annoying sometimes.

Of course, since the campaign hasn't been deterred by the fact that neither of the "two new democracies" have held elections yet, or by the fact that the Iraqi olympians themselves have stated their preference that Bush not run the commercial, I doubt the USOC piling on will change many minds at BC HQ.

Yeah, they should have at least put a "still in beta testing" disclaimer up.

See here's the rub Larry. You claim credit for the Clinton economy, which he had fuck-all to do with, you got to live with Bush made it so Afghanistan and Iraq compete. Frankly, I think a little infusion of cruise missile metal might motivate the French and the Canadians, but that'll have to wait for term 2.

If I live with it, does that mean you will have to live with giving Clinton credit? I'll take that deal.

btw, your creative edit of my post blahblahblahed the part where I called the USOC's attempt to take their word back annoying and stupid.

Please stop trying to politicize the Olympics. This is venal.

It's Friday afternoon, so I'll be charitable and chalk it up to my [denseness of writing][inscrutability].

Total irony. I was hoping someone could yell about Bush being the one who . . . . etc.

Then I could giggle.

I'm easily entertained.

Kerry's some kind of honor-bound to stop using McCain's statements against Bush, but Bush can use other peoples' images any damn way he pleases? Why, there's something in Article II that can't be found in Article I?

He who fights and runs away . . .

A good example of the dangers of trying to own a whole war:

"If you want to know how veteran supporters of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth feel, here is a comment from one Army Vietnam vet that captures it, “If John Kerry loses, it will be the parade we never had.”"

(Don't know the cite. Not that important.)
