I can't speak for Goldberg, but Noonan appears to think she's being charitable to Rather by suggesting that he has been brainwashed (or something) and doesn't really believe what he says he believes. Not to mention that it runs completely counter to what she said at the start of the piece about Rather's experiences reporting on the civil rights movement and in Vietnam.
