Who was the big freestyle guy way back when? From Florida, maybe?

When you get really rich from doing all the law stuff, you can build a 20-foot-high concrete wall around the back of your palatial estate and skate in private to your heart's content, with no mocking eyes present.
The freestyle guy you're thinking about is probably Rodney Mullen, the pioneer of the picnic tables. Amazing. I think he's still skating, and I think may be included as one of the default skaters in the TH video game series, so hopefully that's bringing him a little money.

The private skate village would be nice. It was always a little embarrassing showing up to the public skatepark, and the young dudes would skate in just shorts and shoes, and I'd show up armored out like a Stormtrooper.

eta: Shoulda stp'd -- never mind.
I think that's just not correct. There are certain things a runner can do and have it not be interference, such as slide hard to break up a double play; it just happens that more of them happen while on the basepaths.

I didn't see the play, but it sounds like interference and the umps blew the call. Of course, bear in mind that the umps initially blew the call on A-Rod and called no interference. It was only because it mattered, with Jeter scoring, that they were forced to think about it at the time. Not justifying it; just saying it was more obviously important.

As for A-rod in the ALCS, I never saw it as that big a deal. The umps got the call right in the end, so fine. I think he could have been called out simply for going out of the restraining box, but I don't have a replay handy.

All that said, if either of those plays is interference, why is it not interference when a player runs over a catcher?

Worse. At least Belle didn't fake the friendly. He was an asshole all the time. ARod puts up great numbers and has been (until recently) pretty anti-clutch. Then he tries to pull off the sincere "love for the game, respect for my colleagues" (and I truly thinks he loves the game, I just think he is so full of himself that he is incapable of respecting other players the way he should) crap and it just comes across as scripted and false.

Yes, Rodney Mullen! Amazing to watch.

So, Not Bob, Ty (and whoever else), I'm wondering if you watched the Yankees-Red Sox game last night. If you did, you probably saw the play where Robinson Cano tagged Millar out in the second inning. If you didn't, I will describe it for you.

Millar is on first, a sharp ground ball is hit to Cano. Cano who is standing right behind Millar goes to tag Millar to start the double play. Millar is a good 30 feet from second base. As Cano applies the tag, Millar, trying to avoid it, falls over on his back. Cano, tries to step over him to make the throw at first. Millar intentionally sticks his legs up in the air to trip Cano. Clearly interference, even though the brain-dead umpires didn't make the call. Cano falls and is unable to complete the double play.

Please explain to me how this is any different from ARod's slap-play in the playoffs. Is Millar now in the same class as Arod as far as gamesmanship goes? Should he forever be categorized as a cheap player?

I haven't heard Schilling admit that his teammate made a "bush league" play yet, but I'm sure it's coming.

TM
I saw the play (but not the replays) and in real time from across the bar, it looked like Millar fell on his clumsy ass while trying to avoid running into Cano.

If you want to put Millar in the bush league category, you won't get any arguements from me.

I was going to answer that the player has the right to the baseline (as in the Albert Belle example), but no one ever tries to remove a third baseman's head from his body on a close play at third.

Then I was going to say that it might be because he has all that protection, but if the pitcher covers, you can Bo Jackson them too.

I like the rule. So I'm going to go with: It makes the game more exciting.

I think that's what the umps went with. Did you watch the replays? Interference is clearer than day. They showed it like 50 times.

Nope. Right after the play I had to go into the other room for my soccer meeting. Millar is capable of such antics.
