ETA: I note a lot of people use this "in a way" caveat lately. I hear it a lot in convos. Which "way" is it referring to? I assume it implies something pathetic in one way is something other than pathetic in another way. But you refuse to disclose how many "ways" there are, and how many many other "things" (pathetic, abstruse, impolite, erogenous...) the object referred to can be. It's like ending the concert on a Dark Star teaser. You can't leave those loosse ends untied.
