Any suggestions? Fiction or non-fiction is fine. No Ayn Rand or books by people who yell on TV for a living.

Thanks!
Bill Buford - "Among The Thugs." Buford follows organized mobs of Man U fans around in England and Europe in the early nineties and tries to get inside their heads. Then he realizes there may be nothing there. Highly entertaining, quick read for the plane.

For something perhaps a little different, and on the non-fiction side, I've been working my way through the W. W. Norton "Great Discoveries" series of biographies of scientists. They tend to be written by people known for their writing rather than their prowness in history of science, so they're pretty readable. They're short and not overly technical (at least so far - I'm just starting the Godel one, which may be a bit harder to follow).

Incompleteness: The Proof and Paradox of Kurt Godel

Lavoisier in the Year One: The Birth of a New Science in an Age of Revolution

Great, thanks, now I have ruined a perfectly good tie with drool.

"Island at the Center of the World" by Russell Shorto.

I raved about it on the PB about a month ago.

Share with a co-worker? You'll feel better, and likely make a friend!

As if I couldn't hate the Jets anymore...

Vinny Testaverde, 42, who spent some of his best NFL seasons with the New York Jets, is set to rejoin the team in place of Pennington.

Why would a Seahawks fan hate the Jets so much?

For that matter, why would anyone hate the Jets so much? Our friggin' team is cursed.

The only post season game I've ever attended, the Oilers beat the Jets in a wild-card match up in the Astrodome. I've liked them ever since then.

Fucking Broncos.

This didn't stop anyone from hating the Red Sox.

But we are cursed and doomed. Vinny Testaverde? Is that a joke? Don't get me wrong, I liked the big guy when he played for us that one season ABOUT TWENTY FUCKING YEARS AGO WHEN HE WAS ALREADY 80.

You don't remember? Last game. Playoffs or not. Bad bad call by ref. Testaverde not really over goal line. No playoffs. Return of instant replay.

"People told me it looked like it wasn't in," Testaverde said after his 5-yard sneak on fourth down with 20 seconds left Sunday was ruled a touchdown, giving the Jets a 32-31 decision over the Seattle Seahawks. "I got knocked around and sometimes you can't see the refs. There were a lot of questions whether I was in or not, which is all the more reason for instant replay."

Television replays showed he didn't reach the end zone.

"It makes you sick," Seahawks coach Dennis Erickson said. After being informed what the replay indicated, he added, "It makes you even sicker."

Seahawks cornerback Shawn Springs wondered if the officials had been "intimidated." The refs should really let the players decide the game," Springs said. "Don't make a call that determines the outcome."

Look at the bright side. Erickson is no longer your coach.

Silver linings, and such.

Thanks for the suggestions

Thanks to posts and emails, I now have a lot to work with. (Oh, I almost forgot -- barely, sweetie, I read dark and complex books because I am too simple and nice in real life. Seriously, was "The Corrections" really all that dark?)

I love you all.
