I think that's stupid. If the ball gets away and you leave the batter's box towards the dugout, you should be out. You either don't care or aren't paying attention. If the catcher doesn't tag you on a ball that hits the dirt, you can walk towards the dugout, take off your batting helmet (and hitting armour) and wait until he gets to the dugout and then run to first? That's just dumb.
