But, keep it up, and sooner or later people will start listening to the Dems on Gitmo, too. |

 | Oddly enough, the moral conservatives seem to think they got the short end of the stick. Lots of lip service, but Bush has spent his political capital on tax cuts instead of banning abortion, or so they say.

 | Pelosi. She doesn't thrill me, but she is not only a damned effective leader but (I hope and believe) much less of a leftist nut than you think.

She has built connections to the "Blue Dog" faction of Dems in the House (conservative Southern Dems mostly), who after this election will probably outnumber the Congressional Black Caucus, as well as the DLC types. They will have enough clout, and I think Pelosi will be wise enough, to generally try to set policy on key issues through the center of the Democratic caucus rather than at the outer edge. That may be little consolation to true conservatives, but . . .

 | It's interesting to me that there is such a strong taboo in this country on showing pictures of dead and maimed casualties of war. This is not a new thing -- John Dower's book, War Without Mercy , describes how the media self-censored such stuff in WWII. It's not that you never see bodies, but they usually are displayed only in apparent repose. In other countries, the publication of such more graphic pictures is routine.

If I recall correctly -- frankly, my memory is a little shaky on this one -- there were some conservatives who were upset that more people didn't see pictures of people falling on 9/11, or the private security guards killed in Fallujah and strung up on the bridge there.

Is the role of the media to be a cheerleader during wartime, or is it to provide information? Seeing as how we live in a democracy, I would have thought the former.

 | I think that has to do with what I think is a misconception (at least at the extremes) of the appropriate role for a journalist and/or the demands imposed by journalistic ethics. The exposure of the international banking surveillance program was a bad call, as I think I said at the time.

 | Don't do the y'all stuff again, B . . . if we have at least a reasonable belief that they are AQ, I have no problem looking at their mail, though I'd like to have the FISA court involved.

As for Foley, how old are your boys?

 | Yes. And not just Rove but all the little Rovelets who run individual R campagins. And the Dems are stirring it up to get out their vote ('cause there are a lot of Dems who need a little assurance that they're not just heading down to the polls to get bonked again).

Odd confluence, but there's nothing wrong with a high turnout. |
