It's a combination of two things - 7th grade Texas History, and my mother's favorite ring has a big (blue) topaz in it. It just stuck in my head.

I have no such similar excuse for my knowledge that the mockingbird, pecan, pecan, bluebonnet, and Mexican bat are the Texas state bird, tree, nut, flower and flying mammal respectively. I just know those because I'm a nerd. A Texas-raised nerd.
