They have to switch landline to IP and back, so there's something more.

Compare to skype, where you pay only for calls to/from landlines, but not all internet-based.

Can you retrieve your messages remotely? When I had an answering machine, I always had a devil of a time doing that.

Does your message go something like "Believe it or not, Burger isn't at home, Please leave a message at the beep. I must be out, or I'd pick up the phone. Where could I be? Believe it or not, I'm not home."
I have an answering machine too. No tapes, it's digital. Checking it remotely is an option, but I rarely do as people who want to reach me call my cell.

Exactly. If they don't have my cell number then I don't really need (or perhaps even want) to get their message until I get home.

All I know is I pay like $200 a year, and get unlimited long distance, voice mail, call forwarding, caller ID, conferencing and the ability to check my voice mail online.

That seems worth it.

So, you have an answering machine for the people who don't actually want to talk to you. They just want to leave a message.

Why not turn them on to: http://www.slydial.com/

Isn't that what visual voicemail is for?

Are you my brother? Did you recently get a new deal with Internet access but it also meant no more caller ID?

Pretending you didn't get the VM from the partner never works.

What I'd really like is a good product* that would take my cell phone calls and route them to any phone in the house when I'm at home. I suspect that Verizon et al. have bought up all the competent makers of such devices, though.

*They exist, but all appear to work like ass.

Plane crash in Hudson

Apparently a US Airways plane went down in the Hudson next to NYC. WTF?

"According to Channel 4 television news, the plane apparently took off from LaGuardia Airport and was bound for Charlotte, N.C. and had 146 passengers and 5 crew members. The plane, according to the news report, may have hit a flock of birds. The pilot tried to return to the airport when the plane fell into the Hudson.

Television reports show several boats around where the plane is mostly submerged in the water.

One witness interviewed by Channel 4 said he saw the plane decending steadily without its landing gear down."

survivors? I've never listened to the emergency instruction since it seemed like they were just to comfort the really scared. next time I'm reading them.
