You think I don't know that? Why do you think I have him on a totally respectful ignore?

We got notice there will be a class action. I told myself if we get a check I would send it to the widow of one of the engineers. I told myself it would be bad karma to take money for a crash we all walked away from.
5 years later, when we got the checks, I cashed them.
Class actions have a momentum that doesn't really require everyone to emotionally join in.

You could have not returned the claim form, so I'm not buying your lack of buy in.

I just received $27 in the mail from American Express for some class action I do not recall not opting out of. Found money. Whoo Hoo!

That's because the notice promised Actual. Cash. Money. IIRC, you could either take $10 or tell them how many days you spent overseas during some period of time, and get a settlement based on the number of days. I'm surprised you got only $27. I got $18.

I recall that now. I came up with something like 240+ days abroad during the relevant period. Of course, I rarely used my AMEX card at the time, preferring a different Visa card, so I really cannot complain.

Of course you did, because you know those fuckers at Amex rape you on the currency conversion rate, which was the basis for the settlement in the first place. Win! Win!

Currently, Amex has the lowest surcharge of any card I have (isn't capital one the only major that doesn't tack on 2 or 3%?)--and no one will tell you what the exchange rate they use is anymore, so it's a crapshoot. I got ~$150.

I believe that's right:
Cap one is 0% (I think they rebate the Visa/MC 1%)
Amex is 2%
The rest are 3% or more, including the 1% from V/MC.
Bankrate

Of course, it's the floating rate they use for the conversion that's most important, and it's now (as far as I can tell--I call whenever we're going somewhere to try to compare) a total black box. Before the lawsuits, they would tell you what the day's exchange rate was--at least AmEx and MBNA (and maybe Chase predecessors).

Are they no longer using the interbank rates they used to charge? Because I smell yet another class action suit if they're using the cambio rates.

I'm sure they are using whatever the cardholder agreement states, but I haven't read mine to confirm. The last couple times I've tried to get an answer on the phone, I'm told that they don't know the rate until the end of the day and questions about the prior day's rate are deflected, too. I'm never charging so much that it's worth half an hour of arguing up the supervisor ladder.
