I've seen stories on him before as a wrestler. Frankly, I don't understand how we was successful at that, but I gotta...er...hand it to him. I can't imagine a mixed martial arts fight could be made where he wasn't completely destroyed if the other guy knew what he was doing and fought all out.

I doubt he'd do any (effective) striking. I imagine he's an all-submission holds kind of guy.

I think it's kind of a freak show dressed up like a legitimate fight (although, to be fair, that's what I would have said about his first 35 wrestling matches). The other guy in the ring clearly wasn't going all out.

I don't even see how he could do submissions. Most submissions involve leverage to an isolated limb of an opponent. The same holds true for a lot of wrestling moves, though, so who knows?

I thought it was a little ridiculous that they wouldn't let him strike because of the gloves issue. He doesn't have hands! Why should he need gloves?

His opponent said that he was keeping his distance to avoid getting taken down. Good strategy, but that makes for a pretty boring fight.

I agree that there's something of a freak show factor. But the dude approached the promoters, they didn't go to him. I certainly wouldn't want to see him against anything approaching elite competition for all the reasons Sidd would have listed if he wasn't afraid of boring everyone, but what he competed in was basically an amateur circuit. Let him have his shot, I say.

I don't think he can do submissions at all.

His opponent picked the only strategy that anyone would use in this situation -- keep your distance, move away, and peck at the guys face with low jabs. Don't go for a knockout or everyone will hate you.

The fights are inherently unfair to the opponents because of the last thing -- no one's going to try to knock the guy out. And, also, because of the rule that this fighter is ALWAYS "down," meaning on his knees. Most (all?) MMA orgs in the US have the rule that you cannot kick or knee a downed opponent to the head. That means, you cannot kick or knee this guy at all, ever. Some fighters use that as a tactic -- they basically kneel or lie down so they can't get kicked (jiu-jitsu fighters used to do this a lot). And the refs cn always stand them up to get the fighting going and avoid sheer boredeom. But you can't do that with this fighter -- so only one fighter is subject to being "stood up" by the ref.

None of this strikes me as fair to the other fighters. And then there's the "freak-show" aspect of it all, but I don't see that as such an issue.

Hammer-fist. I think it's legal but I'm not positive.

the opponent didn't fight all-out, according to what I've read. He didn't remotely attempt a knock-out. And he still got booed.

A guy on my high school wrestling team wrestled and lost to a dude with only one leg. The guy had the upper body strength of someone 20 or 30 pounds heavier. The guy on my team didn't know how to wrestle him. The guy basically propped himself up like a tripod. As soon as he managed to put his hands on my teammate, the match was basically over because he was so much stronger.

You think maybe he cut off his leg to make weight?

Now You Can Listen to Flower's Tunes

One of the local indie record stores has a new download store with indie music not always availble on itunes or Amazon. And they use a higher bit rate for better quality sound. Now you can listen to the same music as that hipster PLF.

Couldn't they just pick him up and smash his face repeatedly into their knees or drop kick him across the ring? Of course this would never happen, but if you pick him up off the ground, is the rule still in effect?

I don't know. There's something about a limbless man fighting an MMA fighter that doesn't exactly feel right to watch.

Celtics/Bulls

What an amazing series.

Question: How many dirty plays does one player need to make before being called a dirty player? Rondo has intentionally tripped Hinrich on a fast break, took a cheap shot at Brad Miller to keep him from converting near the end of the game and now, has grabbed Hinrich and thrown him into the scorer's table for no apparent reason. I do not understand how the refs watched him do that (live and on replay) and then decided not to give him a flagrant. Absolutely ridiculous.

I guess justice was served when Rose muffed Rondo's weak ass jumper to all but end the game.

I hear there's a big pointy metal tower thing that people think is pretty cool.
