I was finally presented with a paper printout of my outlook contacts. Strangely, they didn't redact it at all.

The problem with the concept is that Apple is unlikely to make an iPhone that is CDMA, which only Verizon and Sprint use (in basically the entire world). Verizon is planning to introduce a next generation service that should be compatible with the next generation of GSM service, but Verizon's plans are to start rolling that out only in 2010 or 2011, and then only in select locations. So if a Verizon iPhone were available then it's likely it could be used only in some cities.

The speculation about the rumor is that it was leaked by Apple to gain some leverage in negotiations with AT&T on an extension of exclusivity.
Do you know anything about an email gadget called a Peek?

I would just post on Facebook asking all my friends to add phone numbers, but then I'd never get coltrane's info

Yet they were not nice enough to give it to you in electronic format so you could easily import. (I guess we know they're not nice enough . . . )

Probably not much to be useful. If it's what I'm thinking of--an email-only handlheld--the reviews I saw were good design for what it is but why would someone want an email-only device at the service cost it comes with. Of course, the second part is something that really doesn't serve much purpose as a review, since presumably you can figure out whether $20/month (or whatever) is worth it to you.

How long did the "finally" take? Days? Weeks? Months?

Days.

The HR director and the general counsel were being particularly difficult. I finally called the president of the company and appealed to his humanity, however tiny and shriveled it might be.

Any suggestions short of the iPhone? Or is the iPhone worth switching to AT&T for?

AT&T coverage in my area sucks. And everyone who has an iPhone loves it, save for the phone part of it. I'm holding out until Apple makes a deal with Verizon.

I just replaced my two year old phone battery for about $25 to avoid making a decision and also to avoid getting involved in any long term contracts.

AT&T is pretty crappy in LA too. Which managed to surprise me -- silly me thinking they would make some effort in the (first or?) second largest market in the country. I've heard positive things about AT&T from New Yorkers, but I'd definitely ask around with respect to other markets if thinking of making the switch. I love the iPhone but also miss Verizon. Only good thing I have to say is that the iPhone worked out great in France and AT&T has a good international data plan that you can turn on for international travel and then turn back off once data charges have cleared and you are home. It cost me $25 to have full data access for a week in France. Not bad.

I have an iphone- my fingers are too fat to use the internet on it, but I mostly use it to do email and as a, you know, phone.

the "bad phone" part is damning for a phone, you have to admit- plus I cannot send email about a third of the time, I think because of the bad coverage part.

I'll go ahead and add that the data coverage in LA is fine and I never have problems getting on the internet or sending e-mails (although I'm annoyed that it keeps randomly signing me on to random wireless networks even though my settings are set for it to ask me and I always say no to all those random networks, which never seem to work well (or at all)). The phone service is what sucks. It drops calls on me infinitely more than Verizon ever did (really, I don't think I had one dropped call on Verizon in LA). It didn't help that I started with a defective SIM card, but I've also dropped calls or otherwise had the phone not work at random times (and with the phone showing I have coverage) since I've had the new SIM card.

That was a lot of parentheticals but I am not sorry.

The Problem With Phone Orders

[answering phone] "Cakey Cake Bakery, Jill speaking! How can I help you?"

"Hi, I need to order a cake for my boss. We have a photo of him playing golf that we'd like to put on it, though - can you do that?"

"Of course! Just bring the photo in on a USB drive and we'll print it out here."

"Great, I'll bring it by this afternoon."

Later...

"Hey, Jill, what am I putting on this cake?"

"Oh, check the counter; I left the jump drive out for you there."

[calling from the back room] "Really? This is what they want on the cake?"

"Yeah, the customer just brought it in."

"Okey dokey!"
