I got hit that way a bunch of years ago and did the same thing. Knowing what I know now, I'd have gone for "treatment" of those soft tissue injuries. Instead, I went to the law firm interview I was headed for at the time. Brilliant.

I know they've jacked the rates, but Amtrak is worth every penny on that ride. Using every other form of transport, that trip just seems to go on forever.

2. given flights into NYC right now, nightmarish, and given that you get on and off Amtrak in the cities, you can't beat it.

right after F's accident I almost got hit by a guy turning w/o looking for peds- I punched his car, I did that several times back then, but with old lady drivers the other times.
this big hulking guy stopped his car and got out yelling at me. I thought I was going to get hit, lots. I fear he wasn't collectible, at least given the look of his car

When I got hit, it was my fault. I wasn't watching where I was going, so there was no getting mad at the woman. I kind of felt bad for her. Seemed pretty rattled.

And DC's train station is great. They have that elevated restaurant that looks over the whole place. It's a pleasant place to wait. And Penn Station's nice enough. Nothing spectacular, but they have all the food and magazines stores one requires.
I'd like to take a train across the country. That'd be fun, I think.

Agree. Look into the non-acela version if money's an issue. Most of the non-acelas are metroliner quality, not dingy, and make it to NYC in 3 hours (or 3:15), so for an extra 20-30 minutes you save a decent amount. You have to look at the schedule because some of them do take longer (like 3:45).
Of course, if you have the means I highly recommend Acela.

Penn Station is a dump. Not, perhaps, if you go by the standards set by Trenton, Newark, and such. But it's a maze, crowded, noisy, and very inconvenient if you're carrying any luggage. While there seem to be plenty of food stores, I'm not sure it's just the same one that you come at from 17 different directions when you try to find your way.

I'm familiar with Penn Station (and would agree that it is a basement-y dump). I did live in Hell's Kitchen for five years in the early 1990s. It's just been a while since I've been in the city, and even longer since I had to worry about getting there from Washington.

PS Still no hotel recs? Orbitz is turning up a decent rate at the Paramount, in my old neighborhood.

New York Travel Questions
As long as the board is not answering questions about New York City, I thought I'd ask some. I have relatives that will be visiting TCOTU in the fall. As I used to live in San Francisco, they asked me if I knew anything about Broadway shows. I appeal to the denizens of the board. - Is there a comprehensive list of Broadway shows?
- Do Broadway shows have a "fall season" or do shows just open and close without regard for the seasons?
- What's the best way to buy discounted tickets?
Thanks in advance for your indifference.

I used to stay at the Paramount when I worked for a publishing company in NY. I liked it in 1992. I have no idea how well it has aged, but it used to be a great hotel with a Dean and Deluca in the lobby.

My sister takes BoltBus.

I don't think I would like a train ride across country. I saw this video about a week long train trip across Australia. Each day it stops for 5 or 6 hours in some city then goes. It looked wonderful as to bed and food and scenery, but you're stuck looking out a window of a train for 8 hours a day. I was getting antsy just watching- "okay if I did this, 5 hours in ______, run for an hour, then shower, then I could see the whatever, then I'd have to hurry back. Same thing WRT cruises- my obsessions rule out that mode of transport.
