On the basis of the syrah I've had a few times at Zaytinya, I would have to disagree.

On their web site, there's a list of wines available by the glass. Here's what I had, I suspect:

I've drank plenty of wine in a JCC restaurant- Israeli wine is for shit. I mention that so this does not come off as politically motivated- that part of the world is not properly climed for wine- plus, factor in the whole bekaa valley is ofter a war zone, and one can understand that wine making may be a secondary concern, even to the vintners-

like, do you think the kibbee niyah would be better at the DC restaurant, or at a small restaurant somewhere in Bekaa? now extrapolate-

The Lebanese wine industry has been around for millennia. It reached its high point in the 50s and 60s, when Beirut was known as the Paris of the Middle East.

While it has suffered greatly from the years of civil war and social upheaval, they still manage to turn out some excellent wines.

I would not tell you about chicago pizza or chicago pizza wine- DO NOT make the mistake of arguing with a Detroit gourmand about middle eastern anything. that you can choke back a lebanese wine (and I could certainly help you improve your choice there) does not mean that you are drinking a wine that is anywhere near the value and taste of several non-lebanese wines on the menu. you are paying for pretense, and the owner is in the back drinking french wine and laughing at you.

Chateau Musar, depending on the year, is a good wine and worth trying. Remember WineMaster Andy's admonition (notwithstanding the Boston thing) that good wine is made in many different locales and you need to be open minded and try stuff.

I read a piece in Esquire about Chateau Musar a number of years back and it got me curious enough to find a bottle and try it. The bottle I got was a Cab/Syrah blend and, while it was not up to Cakebread or Castello Banfi standards, was certainly a decent wine.

Of course, I'm not a highfalutin' nose-in-the-air, head-up-his-ass oenophile like Hank, so I may not be the best judge. But it beat the hell out of Night Train.

The Halloween store near us is full of Jesus costumes (not the Puerto Rican kind). Seems kinda odd to me. Are they for Christians who otherwise would have to spurn Halloween as a pagan holiday but properly attired can enjoy candy collection with a clear conscience?
