 | I don't remember the year that we got the four wheelers for Christmas. Probably 87 or so? I do know that the kids under ten or twelve weren't allowed to ride them alone, and my two younger sisters were out of luck. We weren't allowed to get out of first gear. That no one broke their necks in the next 20 years on those things is a minor miracle, though there were a few scars and near misses.

I don't remember any particular must have present that I ever wanted. I think I might have asked at some point for a Cabbage Patch Kid, but they were ridiculously expensive and impossible to find. I don't remember being crushed when I didn't get one. I did get a Care Bear the year they were popular. I did get a pink "My Heart Belongs to Bo" nightshirt with Bob Schneider's picture on it when I was seven or eight. I thought it was the best present ever.

maybe they felt my corrigenda of personal flaws was already long enough?

It was still a glorious Christmas, though. I think it was the same year I unintentionally ruined my brother's most coveted Christmas gift, a slot car racing set, with his relatively unwanted Christmas gift, a basketball. This event explains so much about our relationship, it's not even funny.
One of my favorite childhood birthday gifts was the Barbie surf van. I had wanted the camper but the surf van turned out to be great, because it wasn't like the one every single other girl on the block already had. I also got a Skipper doll (she of the flat chest and flat hair). She was Jan to Barbie's Marcia.
 | What is a Barbie Friendship?? The best thing about the Barbie Camper was that it could hold all of the Barbie crap in it so when I was done playing I could just stuff that thing to the gills and the entire Barbie world was self-contained. Most of my Barbie stuff was hand-me-downs from my older sister. She actually went out and spent allowance money on fancy dresses and such, so I never had to. I can't say my Barbies ever did have a matching pair of shoes for very long though.

Barbie was a stewardess (not a flight attendant; and today she would be the pilot). She had a cute uniform and a beverage cart and there was a galley and a cockpit.

I have no idea who that maker is or what a set like that would typically run. We both have Etymotic ear buds as well -- I have (an older version of) the model that runs about $100 (ER6 I believe) and he has the model above that. He hasn't really used those since he got the moulded ones though. | Im sure the Man has better quality at a lower price, but this place seems to do them for $139. Hi, Dr. Nick! . Appear to be compatible with your choice of a broad range of commercially available earphones.

I can't say my Barbies ever did have a matching pair of shoes for very long though. | My sisters shared a room and a Barbie DreamHouse. One of them had the remote control Pink Corvette, too. For years, shopping for her was easy because you could always just get her more Barbie shit. The other one rebelled a few years into Barbie-mania and started playing with My Little Ponies. I think it was because she wanted toys of her own instead of the hand-me-downs from two older sisters.

I had a few Barbies. But they didn't hold much interest for me, as I prefered to play outside with my best friend than stay indoors with dolls.

Again, the whole childless thing, but when I was a kid I certainly didn't always get what I wanted, in particular the BB gun my dad wouldn't let me have.

I also don't recall ever really wanting the latest fad toy, and I am wondering if that was my doing or my parentls.
 | Why do you respond to every possible string? In this case, was it to tell us all how grounded you are? Jesus.

Lost from your questioning is the fact that sometimes you did get what you wanted as a gift. And if you say you didn't want something one or many of your friends had, then you're full of shit.

A child surely doesn't always have to receive the list of things they want for birthdays, chanukkah, christmas, whatever. But it's not exactly a character destroyer to give them something they want either.

 | I was curious why people go on the hunt for latest fad toy. To me, it's a weird (repeated) phenomenon and I was interested in how it came about for the several posters who seemed to be participating in it.

Also, perhaps you have not heard, but we are judgment-free around here, mister. |

I steer clear of all big toy stores if I can. But when I was really little, and FAO Schwartz was on the second floor of the building across the street from where it is now, it was the single greatest place in the world. I remember going there with the brother of one of my mother's friends. And he bought all these wonderful electric trains and train sets. He said they were for him, but I just knew he was going to give them to me before he went back to wherever he came from. Turns out he was a fucking loser who played with trains. Thanks for the character building!
