I expect the product you get in coastal Texas in April is vastly different but the non-local stuff doesn't look to be better quality and is certainly not fresher than the local grocery chains.
On the other hand, I love buying from the growers at the farmers market when the seasonal stuff comes in. Super fresh, typically good quality. I just don't buy bananas, grapes and mangoes from them.

The Jolly Green Giant is from MN, no? I'd buy fruits and vegetables off the street from him....

No Snickers for me anymore, either. I don't want to lose my Jennifer Aniston-like waistline.

I'm going to buy a blender today. Anyone have any suggestions?

I still have the bottom of the line Oster that I got in college to make Pina Coladas. Servicable for crepes, smoothies, mayonnaise and some soups.
Whenever it dies, or loses all of it's buttons--I think frappe is totally gone now--I am thinking that I'll probably spring for a Vita Mix.
FWIW, my dad got the new Cuisinart for Christmas and he's in love.

I have the Oster classic beehive and have loved it. I have replaced the blade assembly once, but the motor hasn't had any issues. I seem to recall Cook's recommending the narrow-bottomed blenders (Oster, Waring) over the broader ones (Cuisinart, Kitchenaid).

I'm not particularly happy with the narrow-bottomed blender that I have. You have to have good amount of liquid in there to make it really work, which sucks if you are trying to puree fruit, for example.

I have a stone mortar and pestle I bought in Singapore 24 years ago. I don't get why people can't stick with the basics.

Bet-
from reading all the posts here over the years I am now ready to predict how an iron chef battle of all would go-
it would be down to Sidd, fugee, Wonk and RT as final four. If I were the judge I would say the finals would be RT v. Sidd- now here's the wild card- iron chef requires ability to adapt basic recipes by change on the fly- I figure Wonk and fugee fall out ((even though making semis is very impressive) final four wonk!) because they seem most married to precise recipes-
the final breaks down this way- I think the cooking sidd talks about is more me, but RT seems the least tied to a recipe- OTOH the theme food will impact too-
In the end, assuming the theme doesn't wildly favor one of them I think Sidd would win by 1 point, simply because of the tastes i have- totally unfair.

Don't know about the Wonkster but you nailed it for me. It's because I'm more of a baker than a cook. But I'd own them all in baking!
